Steven, I think the perception changes when people play legitimately excellent courses with firm conditions. Most golfers see Augusta on TV and think "Wow, that's perfect conditioning." If they were to play Augusta in person and see that balls release on the greens and angles matter, it might change their perspective on what good conditioning does to playability.

No one likes that with which they're not familiar, including golfers. Few golfers are accustomed to greens as firm as the one you described. And as long as someone plays most of their golf in Wisconsin, they're not going to see firm and fast conditions often enough to understand how much more fun the game gets when presented in that manner.

The argument that it's fair because everyone plays the same course is correct, in my view, but "is it fair?" isn't really the right question.  After all, you could say the same thing about a course in absolutely horrible condition -- because everyone plays the same conditions, it's still fair even if you can't make a 4-footer because the greens suck.

The better question IMHO is to ask whether the conditions are optimal, excellent, good, ok, bad, or terrible.  From what you've said, it sounds to me like they are pretty terrific.  But Mark S's questions also seem relevant to answering that question.

If player A could not hold the green what do you say to the 15+ hanicaps?  Golfers really believe that a shot hit in the front or middle of the green should hold the green.  Should they take up darts instead??

Obviously I can't speak for all 15+ hcprs. However, when a shot does not work for me and the people I play with, we recognize that the shot was too hard for our abilities. We do so, because there are many shots that are too difficult for our abilities.

This is why tour pros scream about unfair so much. E.g., TPC Sawgrass when first opened. To use the terminology too difficult instead of unfair, would be an admission of weakness whilst they are attempting to prove they are the best in the world. Such a confidence shaking admission will not do their prospects any good.
