Ross,
regardless of what the Guardian says the EU Commission has already confirmed that an independent Scotland would have to apply for EU membership. People living in Scotland are EU Citizens because they are British Citizens and if they became independent they would become Scottish citizens revoking the British citizenship (it is highly unlikely they will be allowed to keep it). As such they would also be revoking the EU citizenship.
Interestingly this has been discussed today on BBC Radio 4 where the a Spanish government minister said that Spain would block any application of an independent Scotland for EU membership. Seems they are worried about encouraging breakaway regions and they are not the only country with this view.
On another note, it is amazing how may English people there are here in the Highlands. Maybe they are fleeing all the Scottish politicians in Westminster
