What if.............

.......you were elected the Captain of the US Ryder Cup team for 2016 and the powers that be had decided in their infinite wisdom to play the competition at Augusta National. How would you want to set the course up to suit your team ?

I don't know Mark...in my opinion, very difficult greens put every bit as much emphasis on ball striking as putting because of the skill it takes to leave yourself in good putting position.

The only thing I can think of to really give a team an advantage wouldn't really be appropriate. Determine your hole locations for each of the 5 sessions well in advance and send the guys out to practice to them specifically a month or two ahead of time. Otherwise, the players are really evenly matched and able to learn a course so quickly (especiallly one many know well) that course setup tweaks couldn't have a material, predictable impact.

Jim, yeah as the Dominicans put it, "estamos jodidos." We're screwed.

Since we now are cursed with 4 captain's picks, the only "strategy" I could see is finding and setting up a course in such a way it favors, greatly, a type of golfer very different from those who qualify for the euro team.

So hello minigolf. Of course, our top 8 would stink too.

Gents

What I was getting at, and inspired by Davis Love's decision to cut the rough at where evr the hell the last jamboree was at, was what would you do to the set up to enhance the architecture in a certain way to suit your team, especially as you don't have to protect par.

For instance, do away with the rough (the little there is) and maybe even slow down the greens so as to make some more interesting pin positions. Any takers ?

Niall,

I think we understood the request...it's that there's so little difference between the two sides that makes this challenge near impossible.

Do you see any meaningful difference in play between the US and Euro top 12?

If play = talent level,I say none. They're 24 of the best players in the world. How much difference could there be?

If play = style,I say marginally--but only around the edges. Each team has bombers and each team has putters/chippers.

Maybe 20 years ago the Euros had a lot of guys less familiar with US style bomb and gouge.Maybe the less manicured EPGA courses required a little more finesse. But not anymore.

The only difference between these teams now is their passports.

I respected Colin Montgomery's approach of having the course set up like they would for a normal event without any manipulatiions for the purpose of gaining an advantage.

Seve putting a strip of rough across 17 in 1997 to give the Euros an advantage or Azinger eliminating a tree to in 2008 to accomodate a JB Holmes tee shot strike me as embarrasing episodes.

I would set up Augusta National as it is set up for the Masters.
