Walmer & Kingsdown Golf Club, East Kent UK?
« on: August 07, 2012, 11:56:07 AM »
Here in the US, we are suffering through the tape delayed games of the XXX Olympiad on NBC.  I don't mean to start a thread on how difficult it is to try and stay "uninformed" on the results so that you can watch in the evening with the building anticipation that should accompany sports.

The intro on NBC each night features a shot that is obviously from a helicopter of the White Cliffs of Dover and the other night I noticed what I thought was a golf hole adjacent to the cliff.  By way of Google I believe I have identified the course as Walmer & Kingsdown Golf Club.  I don't believe I have seen it discussed and by way of their website, it looks like a nice seaside links and friendly club.

Anyone in the UK familiar with the Club?  Any international members included it on a golf tour of Southeast England?
Would love to hear more...

Thanks

Mike

I have played it several times and I'm sure Mark Chaplin can opine well on it.. Terrific view of France, is a downland course that is an average James Braid layout.  A good friend's house overlooks part of the course but then again, you can see the land of napolean from his 2nd floor guest room as well.  That being said, in my humble opinion having visited Deal 50 times, is spend your money on Deal and Sandwich first unless you plan to frequent the area, and after those two, drive to Littlestone or Rye before playing Walmer.  I'd add a drive to West Sussex too before paying the freight at Walmer.  Its a fine course, just there are much better to see.

I played there on my first UK trip. Chalk based turf, very firm and extemely exposed to winds off the Channel.

I turned up unannounced while driving around sightseeing. They were having an open medal round that day so they paired me up on the spot with two members and off I went. Fun day even though it was the second-most wind I've ever played golf in.

I'm afraid to say whilst I now live in Deal I've yet to play Walmer & Kingsdown.

I played Walmer and Kingsdown and Canterbury as warmup rounds to what was to follow:  RSG, Deal, Littlestone, Rye, and then some of the Healthland courses south of London.   Beautiful cliffside views, and it really is not that bad of a course.  A great warmup, for visitors looking for that before heading onwards to the great Links courses of Kent.
