Television, Setup, and Shadows
« on: June 11, 2012, 06:31:19 PM »
I watched the first (I think) women's major of the year and was amazed to see that the hole location on the finishing hole was obscured by the shadow of the television camera tower behind the green for the final several groups.

One would think those in charge of setup would understand the difficulty posed by a shadow directly over the hole.  For several players the shadow of the operator (and his or her giant camera) was directly over the cup.

There are many considerations for setup and the location of shadows (especially man-made ones) for the final groups on the final days would seem to be one, no?

I also noticed these shadows while watching the tournament Sunday. The set-up seems particularly egregious at a venue, Locust Hill, that has hosted a summer tournament for 35 years. At some point, tournament organizers should learn the position of the sun at 6pm in June.

Frankly, it made the event seem second tier.  The fix is so simple.

Those shadows of the flags weren't good, either. That happened at Cog Hill in the Western, oops, BMW a few years ago, and the flags were taken down.

I found the shadow of the television tower to be worse than any man-made waterfall or mound or other sorts of synthetic intrusions often discussed here.
