During the US Open telecast Thursday, Roger Maltbie and Johnny Miller expressed uncertainty over which of Olympia Fields' holes is the signature hole (and just as importantly, which were the front and back nine signature holes).
It seems now is the time to start a new panel to help these commentators to better identify signature holes. I proposed the idea a few years ago to little acclaim, but times have changed. Now that pervasive marketing and inane television commentators are a way of life, it’s time to pander to the lowest common denominator by announcing the formation of The American Society of Signature Hole Committees (ASSHCom).
The ASSHCom panelist will work at his/her own expense. We reserve the right to charge you $100 to build a website that we reserve the right to actually put online. We also reserve the right to require that you come to our occasional gatherings so that the organization can profit off of the panel while showcasing premier signature resort destinations who will advertise in our publication, Signature Journal. We also reserve the right to require panelists to pen articles about their favorite signature holes for the journal.
Panelists will be asked to vote on each course's premier signature hole, championship signature, front nine signature, back nine signature, waterscape signature and overall signature hole. The courses in question will pay for the privilege of certification, with small signs sent to commemorate the various signature holes as selected by our team of historians, well-traveled low-handicappers, television commentators and golf writers.
