A brief re-cap of the week's events
« on: November 30, 2001, 09:32:23 AM »
The growth of the site was such that we had started to experience re-occuring problems with overloading the server.

When the DG crashed again this past Monday  :'(, the lads at Sitesuite swung into action and this new DG is the result.

The benefits are numerous including greater features, functionality, and a return to greater capacity. It is all state of the art stuff and is just as easy to use (once you become comfortable in moving around in it).

Every existing old post will be transferred over beginning next week but it is a manual effort and it will take time.

Nonetheless, within a couple of months, I hope/expect that people will see this as another positive step in the development of this web site.

However, all such improvements cost money. A strictly voluntary sponsorship program will be implemented at the start of 2002 for anyone interested in helping to defray the costs of running this site. Donations would be caped at $70 MAX and would be on a per annum basis. You will get absolutely nothing for your donation, save for being listed as a sponsor to this site - more on that later.

Cheers,

PS We received more than 100 emails from 6 different countries over the past four days and the one common theme was how meaningful this web site has become to so many people. The kind words that were passed along are certainly appreciated.

Easiest would be to allow payment by Paypal and other electronic means.  That worked well at Ham 'n Eggs site as well as a Porsche site I belong to.

I'm sure ready with my $70.00 annual contribution to Golfclubatlas but I just got wind of the fact that Bill Gates has been thinking about a Microsoft/Golfclubatlas.com merger! How would you feel about that?

The second step might be a Carthage Club style golf course in every town in America! How would you feel about that?

We appreciate people's interest in making some form of a contribution, and again it would be strictly voluntary. I'm sorting out the details and will make a post toward the end of December in this regard.

Basically, after last week, it became evident to me that the constant upkeep of the site along with our desire to incorporate improvements in technology (i.e. like streaming video, etc.) will require a reasonable financial commitment.

When you add it up month after month, year after year, I would appreciate some help.

Ran, and everyone,

There is a common bond among all of us, which is our love of the game. How about this?
To help defray expenses, to have a GCA Golf benefit tournament in four or five regions or all 50 states to raise money for GCA and possibly start a scholarship fund for worthy students of agronomy or architecture? What a great way to meet fellow GCA'ers and play a great course(s) and also help the Morrissett's with their expenses.
Anyone have any feedback?

I would heartily second Bill's idea.  I think many if not most of us who participate on this site (actively or as lurkers) understand that it has the potential to be (and maybe already is!) something bigger than just an esoteric discussion group.  I vote for thinking bigger and bolder rather than continually bootstrapping and/or relying on the dedication and charity of the Morrissett clan.  And maybe, just maybe, there might be somthing really big, like even a Carthage Club, at the end of that bolder path.......

Sounds Great Bill. Do you think if we say a lot of wonderful things about Augusta National, we could hold the GCA annual tournament there in the week after the Masters?

Ran,

A benefit is a terrific idea.  With all of us who have direct or fringe involvement with the golf business, it would probably be fairly easy to pull off, allow you to defray costs and scholarships are always good.  We would need one of us with a little legal background though to draw up a commitment letter that states that anyone getting a GCA scholarship promises that if they become wildly successful and are ever asked to do work on one of the courses of architectural legends, it will be restoration not renovation.

And I took full blame then, and retain such now.  My utter ignorance in not trumpeting a course I have never seen remains inexcusable.

Important works
« Reply #15 on: December 03, 2001, 05:48:01 AM »
Another use for monies will be to pay people for well researched, lengthy articles.

Take a look at Tom MacWood's case. Country Life would have paid him for his 40 page treatise 70-90 years but today, sadly, there is literally NO MARKET PLACE for such as it isn't the type of subject matter that helps sell periodicals to the masses.

GolfClubAtlas.com needs to step up and fill this void but it is only fair that the writers be compensated/encouraged to do so.

Being a collection house for such important works will further differentiate the site and make it all the more valuable.

Cheers,
