Which 19th century links courses have changed least?
« on: January 13, 2012, 03:07:24 PM »
Most British & Irish links courses from the 1800's (or before) have changed radically in the 20th and 21st centuries, usually a lot more than people realise...

Which courses from that era have changed least and therefore epitomise Victorian golf?

To get started, I'll give a few examples from Ireland:

Ballybunion Old - Completely different course - Would need to check notes but maybe no original holes remaining.
Lahinch Old - Completely different course mainly on completely different land. Only Dell & Klondyke from pre-1900.
Portmarnock - In theory one that has changed very little having only one completely new hole designed (par 3 fifteenth) but that doesn't tell half the story. There are 16 different greens / green sites.

I guess Hiutchinson's book is a good reference point here... The Old Course must obviously be the first noted...

Deal has changed considerably with 1,2,3,5,7,13,14,15,16,17,18 from my recollection being original greens. 6 is very close but slightly moved due to the sea wall. I maybe wrong on 13, but do not have a copy of the club history, anyone help out?

6 and 15 have had the tees moved considerably changing both angle and length. The tee on 6 used to be what is now the back tee on 16 so was just off the back left of the 5th green (it's currently used as the winter tee on 6.

The 15th was a dog leg left with the tee on the back left of the 14th green.

With the exception of the 4th Sandy Parlour the far end of the course changed considerably for the 1920 Open.

Sandwich - in my time the 3rd green site has changed considerably, the 8th from a par 3 to epic par 4, the 11th changed from a par 4 to par 3 and a new green site on 14 lengthening the hole by around 70 yards.

I'm obviously more familiar with the Scottish links but can't think of any that wouldn't have changed much since the 1800's. If there are any its probably something like the Inverallochy course, something short and out of the way that has never been a "big" course.
