9-Hole Course at Principia College, St Louis, MO
« on: December 27, 2011, 08:45:58 PM »
I was thumbing thru a book on the works of Bernard Maybeck, a famous architect who practiced from roughly 1890 to 1940. He was a leading exponent of the Arts & Crafts movement.

Most of the buildings and homes Maybeck designed were in the San Francisco area. However, in the late 1920's, he received a very large commission to design the buildings for entire campus of Principia College, near St. Louis. The campus was built around 1931.

The print of Maybeck's design rendering for the campus clearly shows a 9-hole golf course as part of the campus property. I presume the course no longer exists and am not even sure it was ever built.

Here is the master plan print: http://www.principia.edu/maybeck/arch/82.htm

Does anyone know anything about this course?

David,

I've driven past Principia School quite a few times when in the area visiting my in-laws. The "School" is the high school and is in the western suburbs of St. Louis, while the College is just over the river in IL. Which campus was the golf course supposed to be build on?

Google earth shows no golf course there.

P. Craig -

Principia College is in Elsah, IL. That is where the 9-hole course was planned.

Here is the master plan rendering for the college campus. The 9-hole golf course is easy to spot.

David,  I do not know of a golf course on Principia's Elsah campus. I trained at the SIU Dental School in the mid 80's down the road in Alton. I used to eat lunch frequently in Elsah while sightseeing on the Great River Road. Is it possible that this turned into Lockhaven CC which is in Godfrey? This is a nice old club that some of my Profs belonged to- right along the MIssissippi ,South of Elsah. Hope this helps.

Looks like only the track and soccer field are the only parts of the Master Plan that were built.  But then, given the timing, circa 1930, not many courses were being started. The golf course was probably considered an expendable ammenity and funds were concentrated on the buildings.
It is interesting to see the 2 green par 4/ par 5 option on the 9th hole.
Coasting is a downhill process
