be careful out there
« on: November 14, 2011, 09:43:42 AM »
Had a rather stark reminder that we play a game that sometimes can be dangerous.  I played golf with two other GCAers Saturday and after the round we were relaxing in the clubhouse watching some college football.  Then a fellow comes into the room with a pretty nice welt up near his cheekbone.  He is icing it and recounting to all in the room that he was struck by a drive from a golfer on another hole.  He was a long ways away, I think about 250 yards, and was hit on the fly.  With a little bit of arm twisting, my host took him to the hospital and thankfully he did not sustain any permanent injuries.  However, he does have three broken bones.

Joe,  where did it happen?? i will get you out to Concord in the spring. We started our tree program and the place is a bit messy. Tree removal, what a point of disagreement. What about the poor birds? Insanity.

We have a pool and a pond, the pond would be good for you.

Ed, I am anxious to see Concord.  I've driven by it many times and took a small tour around the clubhouse once and it looks pretty good.

I've heard so many stories about the struggles of instituting a tree removal program at clubs.  All the tree-huggers come out in full force... but how come there are no grass-huggers?!  Why doesn't grass get more love?!

Joe,

The grass will get more love...that's why the trees are coming out! ;D

Ed,

Fear not, the birds will still have plenty of perching and feeding opportunities in the tree canopy that remains. They won't all be coming out and I believe, long-term, you'll like the course even more.

Give the project some time and and have an open mind until it heals in. Think you'll give it the two thumbs up on the back side of the work being done.

Cheers,

"I said in a talk at the Dunhill Tournament in St. Andrews a few years back that I thought any of the caddies I'd had that week would probably make a good golf course architect. We all want to ask golfers of all abilities to get more out of their games -caddies do that for a living." T.Doak

Kris,
It's only half done and i love it already. The amount of sunlight on the course now is amazing with a few gone, I can see what a great difference this will make in the spring. i understand those who love trees, but the mission here is to play golf not run a tree farm. We had some who wanted to install fans to save trees and i just do not like that look. Nor the expense to run power everywhere.

Went to the USGA rating manual and it will have zero influence on the ratings. However i think it will make the course healthier in the long run. Just have to withstand the ire of the tree huggers for now.

Ed

Cricket is about to start a major project and has done some great tree removal work.  There are some tremendous views across the course and especially from 12 across the Militia Hill course. It is already terrific and when it is finished I suspect that it will be spectacular.
