My Annual Fighting Illini Invitational Post
« on: September 12, 2011, 11:51:58 AM »
Folks,

As I do every year, I want to once again mention that the college golf season begins in earnest this weekend with the Fighting Illini Invitational (and food fest) at Olympia Fields CC. As has become usual, Coach Mike Small of Illinois has put together an amazing field, with 7 of the top 10 teams from last year playing, and 4 players from the USA's Walker Cup squad that competed at Royal Aberdeen--Peter Uihlien, Jordan Speith, Patrick Rogers, and Blayne Barber. Rounds are Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning, admission, parking etc are free, and we'll have the bbq going.
It's something the membership looks forward to every year, and this one should be especially fun.

The North Course is in very fine shape (especially considering the weather this year) though it's a bit soft, so there should be some good scoring. Anyone thinking of coming out shoot me an email if you want to meet up.

This is a low-key event and a great way to see the best collegiate amateurs play against each other.  Last year, I walked a few holes with Uhlein and chatted with his mom.  I also followed Scott Langley and a couple other Illini players.  I highly recommend this if you have a few hours to spare this weekend.

I will be there on Saturday morning playing the South course with Clint! (if he's not too swamped)  We should all try to meet up.

South suburban Chicago is the center of American golf this week between the Illini Invitational at Olympia - the shot Rickie Fowler made on the par-3 16th a few years ago is etched in my mind – and the professional garden party at Cog Hill. And Olympia's the better bargain.

Thanks Tim. I should have mentioned that both we and the UofI are very honored that the Invitational is sponsored by Polo, and they have been fantastic in supporting the event.

Completed 2 rounds, and it has been a blast and an education. We don't do anything to set up the golf course except grow the rough for a couple days and roll the greens, pins are days 2-4 from the Open, and scoring seems totally dependent on weather. Yesterday was cold and damp, no wind, and the greens were soft. Course avg was 73 (close to lowest ever). Today, sunny with a little wind, and course avg over 76, highest ever (probably too high). Stanford is on top, 13 shots ahead with Cam Wilson at -4, Andrew Yun -3, and Pat Rogers -2. Nobody else under par. Peter U is +5. Short game play is amazing, and 320 yd drives everywhere. Supposed to be windy Sunday, and if it is, there will be very serious hard golf. Leaders go off around 9:30-10.

Man, was that fun! Stanford ran away with the tournament, finishing +9, while Ok St was second at +20. Walker Cupper Patrick Rodgers won individual honors. Regardless, it was a blast watching terrific golfers challenge the course, and deal with the architecture. On the North Course, the hazards essentially run perpendicular to lines of play, and, aggressive as these kids are, they will challenge them to get in position to make birdies. Often, that wasn't not such a good idea, but watching them try to get out of trouble was also fun (for me, if not them). These events are really celebrations of golf, and I urge all of you to attend an amateur event when the opportunity arises. It is the best way to watch golf, walking down the fairway with the players, coaches, and families. We got the chance to watch Rickie Fowler play 6 rounds at OFCC a few years ago (his dad was a riot), Peter U for 12 rounds over the last years, and many others. I also got the chance to drive Az St to the airport this year, and that was great too (Tim Mickelson is the coach).
That was one hellacious beaver.
