Cobbs Creek Re-Routing for Philly PubLinks Better Ball
« on: June 15, 2011, 09:57:29 AM »
A friend of mine who played in the better ball championship said the tournament started on the 3rd hole and the 1st and 2nd holes were changed to the 17th and 18th holes.  Any thoughts?  Any historical basis for the switch-a-roo?

The 2nd hole does seem to require a bit more thought and execution than the 18th though both require a player to play down a certain side of the fairway (2nd - left side and 18th - right side) and both have back to front sloping greens but the third's is more severe.  The 18th plays so much down hill that a better player doesn't need much club off the tee.

The 17th hole could be an eagle hole for the better player so its position at the end of the round seems logical.

But for everyday play I would not want to begin on the third hole, what with the greenside hazard and all.

John,

The course has changed the first tee between 1 and 3 many times over the years.  However, we did verify that the original routing did start on the current par 5 1st.  I think the 2nd is a logical finisher for a tournament course (ending at the clubhouse, with the flagpole) but that hole needs to be lengthened IMHO.  If we are given the chance to complete our project at Cobb's, which potentially includes a tournament routing, I think you'll enjoy seeing the proposed hole that plays to that green.

This was sent to me by a lurking enthusiast, a long time Philly area golfer:

Just so happens there is a street light close enough to the third tee so as to allow one or two earlier tee times in the AM (e.g. for one event I played there, I had a 0545 tee time).  The normal Saturday AM/Sunday AM crowd (a tough crowd who prefers to play insanely early) always kind of liked having the ability to start prior to 6AM…or better said, their wives preferred to have the really early start ergo really early return.  It would be pitch black out there but the 3rd tee was illuminated enough by the streetlight enough to tee off.
