A better way to put it might be to make a distinction between the designer and his designs.

Those 800 album buyers weren't members of the VU.

Speaking with no real knowledge all that shows to me is that Pete Dye was connected in some way to these guys. Neither does it confirm that the influence didn't go the other way as well. While he worked or provided a wage to some of these guys on your list, what influence does he have on golf course design ?

Are we talking influence on design or influence on business? One could argue the above-listed influenced both (to different degrees).

Not that I want to make excuses for the article but, the subtitle does say it is about the 15 most influential US architects.
