Golf Course Renderings of James Paterson Izatt
« on: December 16, 2010, 12:05:56 PM »
From what I understand, he was a practicing Scottish architect that did a number of color renderings of significant courses back in the 70's or 80's. I know he did a few:

Augusta
Cypress Point
Pinehurst ?
Spyglass
Pine Valley
Royal Melbourne

Have never seen a complete list of what of what he did. I have  bought a few of these 10 years ago and every now and then see them up on eBay or even the PBA galleries. They appear to be much less common than years ago.

Does anyone know the history of this project? I also do not know much about his work as an actual architect, but I would think of this as a side hobby.

Anyone else know the history on these renderings & Mr. Patterson?

Hello John,

On my office wall I have a print by Mr. Izatt of the routing of Cypress Point which I purchased about 20 years ago. I recall that he had been living here in the Vancouver area and on seeing your thread, I googled him and found an address for Izatt - Golf Graphics in North Vancouver. There is also a website  here for PBA Galleries of San Francisco who have some of his work:

 http://www.pbagalleries.com/search/item.php?anr=201430&PHPSESSID=lboaeucv&PHPSESSID=lboaeucv

Apparently he passed away in 2009.

My print is dated 1968 and refers to him as a golf architect with offices in Canada, the U.K. and the U.S.A. I have seen several of his prints and they are all very well done. I have no knowledge of courses he may have designed but have not looked into it.

John,

I have been assuming that the Byran Izatt who participates here is his son or perhaps grandson; if so then I am sure your answers will be forthcoming.

Mr. Izatt used to advertise in GOLF DIGEST and sold many of his drawings as a result.  I used to have a few of them as a kid.  The drawings featured concentric ovals that were supposed to represent contour (hills or valleys), but they were not really contour lines, just a representation of them.

Although a relatively rare name, it doesn't seem to be all that rare.  I am not related to James Paterson Izatt.  My father was from Buckhaven, Fife while this Mr. Izatt was from Alva. And, I'm too old to be his son.  A little search of Ancestry.com reveals a fair number of Izatt's in that area of Scotland in he early 20th century.

Bryan,

My bad; the golf world is such a small place that sometimes I assume more connections than there really are.  Have you ever seen his drawings?

Thanks for the insights guys - never even thought to put Bryan into the mix

The drawings are pretty interesting and as Tom said - have some features which I'm was not sure how to interpret.

Does anyone have details on the courses he designed?

My copy of The Architects of Golf is not handy.

My first gollf architecture book, "Great Golf Courses of the World", by William H. Davis and the Editors of Golf Digest (1974) that my father purchased for me back then for Christmas when I was 15 years old included some of Izatt's drawings in the rear of the book, including Pebble and Cypress.

I just checked my 1988 version of Cornish and Whitten and could not find any reference to J.P. Izatt as a course designer. I will check at the BC Golf Museum over the holidays. Intending to spend a few hours out in their great golf library.
