LACC - North Course

Take the time to download a PDF from http://www.thelacc.org/  which give before and after pictures of Gil Hanse & Geoff Shackelford's renovation of George Thomas' course.  The pictures alone are outstanding.

Thanks for the link, Rich.

Some great photos and a really good document.

I think this kind of post-construction document would be incredibly useful for all restorations/renovations.  It should be done more often.

Thanks Rich! Outstanding documentation of the restoration. Hanse/Shack/Wagner look to have nailed it (again), and better still, it appears the membership is pleased.

Just the visual difference in bunker design is worth the read.

Thanks for the tip --- I've now got 34 pages to peruse while watching the Iron Bowl.

Congrats to the membership for doing the right thing and thanks for letting everyone know what a special place LACC is with the wonderful booklet. I am sure there will be wonderful accolades coming soon and I believe that a return to a high ranking is forthcoming. It truly is a return to glory in my opinion. Just absolutely wonderful to see. Congrats to all involved.

Bump

The par 4 7th option looks very cool too. It's funny when I played there years ago I said to my host, "You know it'd be really cool if they had a tee back there on top of the hill." I had no idea it was in the original designs and was shocked to see it incorporated. The whole project floors me.

Also, Is the new back tee on 18 located below the current tees next to the 17th green? Seems like there's a lot of tournament length on that course now. My hopes are probably too high for a future US Open there, but it would be a great venue.

Alex -

The back tee on 18 is up top back towards the 1st green. The tee for the recovered Fowler short hole is left of the front bunker on 17. That might be what you were seeing.

7 is really fun as both a par 3 and a par 4. Played with one of the Asst pros recently and we played two balls there as a 4 and a 3. He made 2 as a par 4 and 4 as a par 3. :)

The work that was done, as well as the guts/smarts of the membership for saying yes to this project are worthy of a standing ovation.

Methinks you're spot on with this observation.

The restored 17th looks phenomenal!!!
What does it matter if the poor player can putt all the way from tee to green, provided that he has to zigzag so frequently that he takes six or seven putts to reach it?     --Alistair Mackenzie--

This is a really fun document to read, particularly the piece on restoring the 6th hole.

LACC has a lot of really great touches and details:

The "course within a course" design.

The vast improvement to a number of key holes.

The new/old free form tees.

The cool flag tee markers.

Reclaiming the cut-downtrees to reface the lcokers and make benches.

The "present an irregular mix of sand and grass, with the ability to easily find a ball but with no guarantee of a simmple recovery shot" strategy on #2. That's perfect in my book.

The restoration of "Little 17" to give the players a fun 19th hole.

I could go on and on.

Cheers to Hans and Shackelford for their brilliant work...

It will be very interesting to see what the raters think. Will it move ahead of Riviera? Could it move into the top 10 in the US in the near future (if not, after the Walker Cup which I think will be an amazing event)? Will the work at LACC cause others to "step up"? It truly is a wonderful masterpiece once again.
