Kiawah PGA Setup in August 2011
« on: October 08, 2010, 03:50:15 PM »
I just learned that, as an early treat for the golf masochist, in August of 2011 we're going to be setting up The Ocean Course exactly like it will be set up for the 2012 PGA Championship, including the 7,526 tee boxes, roughs grown up and fairways hardened and narrowed.  The only thing we won’t be able to do is give specific pin placements (but we will have the greens stemping at tournament speeds).  For those looking to try their skills on a Major-ready course, mark it on your schedule now…

It will be kind of embarrassing as I putt down the cartpaths because I cannot reach some of the required carries off the tees.

Putting down sand cart paths might not be a good idea either.   8)

Only way I would do that is if I was first off in the morning...not sure I would like to play behind a foursome of 15 handicaps playing from 7,526 yards with a stiff breeze!!! :) ;)

Fun idea though for the summer "off" season at the Ocean Course...

Mike:

How much flexibility will there be regarding the tee distances. I can see the back tees in play for the holes that play downwind -- but if were to play #9 let's say in a stiff south wind -- that hole becomes a par-5 for 99.99% of the players.

In regards to the rough -- why have any at all ?

The sheer length and the nature of what the ever-changing wind can do is sufficient challenge.

I do like the firm-like fairways but the goal should not be to see how few players actually break 300 for the four rounds.

Great sales idea for your slowest month. You've got some bright marketing folks down there! I think you'll have fun with this one.

Gators were here first.  Not going to do anything with them.  And, in August, they generally hunker down in the mud trying to stay cool.

As for the bunkers, that's Kerry Haigh's call but I would imagine that they'll play it like they did in the Ryder Cup and Senior PGA -- all transition areas.

As for distances, once again, that's Kerry's call.  I know he was moving tees around 15 minutes before the first group reached the holes at the Ryder Cup.

FYI, Pete was here a couple of weeks ago altering a number of bunkers (in front of the green on No. 2, left side of the green on No. 5, huge change to the left side of the green on No. 11, new tee boxes on 14 and 18.  Looking forward to playing it.  However, it's holding up the folks at EA Sports who are trying to shoot the updated course for next year's version of their video game....

For those of us that think Kiawah is a better course than Whistling Straights  it would be fun, except for August???????? I truly would die.

For real, I've played Kiawah in August and it is fine.  The wind blows so darn hard it doesn't even seem hot...well, at least it doesn't seem THAT hot.   ;)
