Golf in Egypt?

My Good Lady has been stinging to see the pyramids, so we are escaping an English winter in February to go to Egypt. After seeing how Tutankhamen and his boys used to roll, we are going to spend 4-5 days by the Red Sea at Sharm el-Sheikh or somewhere similar.

The problem I'm having is finding which golf courses have actually been built. The internet is full of mentions of Els, Player etc etc all building courses there, but I'm buggered if I can see which ones are open for play and, further to that, worth playing - keeping in mind this is likely to be "holiday golf", so I'm not expecting anything to rival the best of GB&I.

Any help or advice very much appreciated.

why deny your good lady the thrill of seeing the pyramids AND YOU playing golf at the same time. It's what any decent husband would do... ;)

The McBrides have a long history of golf in Egypt.

Except it was just my cousin Tommy who learned to play the game in the early 50's when his dad was the president of Coca Cola Egypt.  Tommy learned to play on a course with sand greens.  I have no idea who the architect was, most likely a British architect.  

As a result of learning to putt on sand greens, Tommy was a terrible putter.  He was so bad we called him "Motorboat" -- putt putt putt putt.

The golf course at the Conference Centre isn't worth the money or the effort. Spend your time in and under the water.

There is also golf at the Siwa Oasis in Western Egypt if you are going to be in that vicinity.

It's only in construction but Thomson, Perrett & Lobb are building a new course at Giza...

It has provided my favourite PR quote of the year from Tim Lobb: "As a design firm there are few opportunities to create golf holes where the line of play is one of the Seven Wonders of the World, but that is precisely what the golfer will experience at New Giza"

Sounds like it's probably not worth it. better to save some brownie points for a golf weekend away somewhere in GB&I when we get home. Cheers.

If you end up going to the Red Sea, there is a Sheraton resort that has a pretty decent Player course called Cascades


The course at the Oberoi at Mena House is not worth playing.

Thanks Ben.

Found it on Google Maps. I can just see Player standing on what would become the tee of this hole, telling the client: "You know what we need that I plan to introduce with my design of this hole? More sand!"

I did, Steve. It was brilliant. We visited Cairo and Luxor and both have to be seen to be believed, for very different reasons.

I ended up playing on my birthday at the Pharaoh course at Dreamland resort as Mena Oberoi's course was shut for redesign. I was basically chasing a course from which I could see the pyramids, which narrowed it down greatly!

I have some more pics that I never got around to posting, mostly because it was pretty unremarkable golf, though not "bad" by any stretch.

Don't know if you're into it, but the scuba diving in Egypt is supposed to be some of the best in the world.....
