John,

Thanks for the photos.  What is the carry from that optional tee on 17 to the fairway if you had to guess?  The place looks pretty challenging and it looks like i may need a few extra golf balls in the bag.

Mark

Mark - our caddie told us it was 285 all carry - we did not try - tit would be futile!!

John,

Great photos!

Did you get a chance to use the short game practice area?  The photos of it on the website make it look awesome.

John - yes it's a very good short game area
Bayonne is a marvel of engineering - from that perspective, end product is stunning.

As a golf course, it's good, but has drawbacks.

The fescue/ rough can be equivalent to a lost ball on  few occasions (tough to find the ball) -  a major drawback. The mounds are used to isolate the holes (needed to the limited acreage)

From a links golf perspective, quite a few of the greens require an aerial approach, running the ball is not an option.

A good, but not great course.   I do feel that a lot of the comments get colored by the marvel of engineering than the architecture of the course.

Ajay - What about the greens & surrounds? Which greens demand an areiel approach? Do they all need the ground game? Most did.

There are a few greens (such as 2) that demand an aerial shot, but for the most part you can run the ball up in the right conditions. I was swinging the driver very well the day I played, but I thought the width off the tee made it a very playable first shot course. The size and the slope of the greens made for some very challenging two puts. Overall, I think the course is just a notch below the area's best but playing there is a great experience and there are plenty of cool holes. They did an amazing job with that site.

I'd respectfully disagree withthe naysayers as to the  quality of this golf course.......it is absolutely fabulous !   THe greens are quite sophisticated with plenty of quirk ...like it is across the pond ( think of # 5 at Royal Portrush)

THe golf course isn't easy , but I'm quite sure if you can play a little you can make some birdies .....they had it set up pretty hard the day I played last week and it wasn't so scary ...but it was really fun.  I lost a couple in the fescue ..but thats the deal if you hit a bad shot into the hay....loved the greens ...thats what impressed me the most..

Think the course overwhelmed the scenery ...not vicey-versa...and the views are quite good  ....some of the best are playing away from the water back towards the clubhouse and up the hill.....#13 is really fun playing the opposite way ( towards the H20)  with a wicked green that looks fairly innocuous ...I was laughing at my two laying partners who  A) degreened the first putt and B) knocked it twenty feet past the pin   (front middle right )  I then proceeded to hit a much shorter putt from the same angle ten feet by , and absolutely would never have believed it could run out that far.....

#14 confused me as to how to play the tee sot and after hitting one short realized that a high cut would have been appropriate downwind  (front pin)  don't think you can run it one here too effectively.... the golf is really really good at Bayonne !!!!!

If the premise of the detractors is to say Bayonne doesn't have the ground option -- then plenty of other metro NYC courses -- xome highly regarded -- would also need to be taken down a few points too.

As an impartial lurker, I see no one being a detractor. Only different grades of good, very good and fabulous. Not one sucked in the bunch.

Sweens has clearly stated his observations are only from a far. Not technically a detractor. And no one said that the lack of ground options on a few holes is the reason for their opinion.

The course is private and as such the proximity of holes, due to the limited space available, is not really an issue. Is it?
