Peter. If nature's infinite variety wasn't the coolest thing, I might agree with you. I'll have to give Variabilty a closer look before I understand your suggestion.

 8) Adam,  (been playing).. now back

I must contend that this is an exercise to qualify.. not quantify, other than to produce a simple ordering.. and then apply a weather/wind factor.. one of my favorite memories from NW Ohio, is playing in dead of january winter, parka hood forcing one to keep head down to see the ball, watching the orange orb fly and bounce on water hazards, in turn walking on water, holing out for reasonable scores on fast and firm akin to a cement road.. and having a ball.

How can pro-rated numbers address that?

Steve, Qualify it shall be.

How shall we qualify the variability?

Adam - that's a tough one alright. Maybe we can think in terms of a feeling that corresponds to this description:

'Naturalness in a course also implies holes guarded by natural hazards, and more particularly by natural turns and twists in the ground designed by the hand of Providence to tease the cut-and-died approaches. We are in danger of monotony on the course which any one of these, or other, artificers plans for us, because they follow good principles too religiously.'

Peter, Aye! And, the architect that finds that non-repetitve flow is what distinguishes these artists? I believe that's why there are so few great courses.

 8) Adam,

some see need to qualify the player to qualify the fun that may be had, but i don't consider a player's overall proficiency controlling.. its whether the player can visualize a shot, sieze the opportunity/challenge/fun that may be presented.. regardless of repeatable skill, does he try it?

some see need to qualify the golf course or name drop the gca to qualify the fun, but i think almost every course has some uniqueness or redeeming feature, whether you call it a signature hole or whatever.. man made or au natural..

some see just being there is fun, so feelings can rule like seeing the Rawls course in person, even though in a light rain vs via pictures, whether you play or not, experiencing Pinehurst or Pebble or TOC, or seeing the Mona Lisa in Paris.. but certainly good course architecture presents more feelings, the Strantz affect

if you've learned anything about golf, it's that its you and the course, maybe we just make it fun if its in our nature.. or its aquired thoughts of what may be possible.. I am Tiger or I am Phil or Rory!  Go for it..

i think I just argued myself out of play.. since its free, one club length

I think we simply have guys list their top 10 fun courses and tabulate the results...Only criteria is that the fun relates specifically to the gca and playing conditions, not to the playing partners and the offcourse amenities...

 8) Jud that's asking for trouble..  not fun..

are you going to qualify public access courses, privates, high & low cost.. exclusive name dropping, among other things?

To me, fun naturally encompasses challenge, difficulty, funk and beauty.   Only my emphasis leans more toward challenge, funk and beauty (feel good factor) and away from difficulty.  In other words, for the difficulty to seriously raise its head it is down to the weather much more than the design.  I would also say that the most fun courses are those which can be enjoyed by all standards of golfers.  The touring pro down to the 28 capper should be hitting shots where they can't help but smile.  Finally, I think affordability plays a role in the feel good factor that fun courses provide.  We all feel better when we think we had a good deal.

1. Rock Creek
2. NGLA
3. The Old Course
4. Sand Hills
5. Merion

Top 5 "funnest" courses I have played.

And just for the sake of this discussion, why were they the most fun? You know, actually qualtify why they were so much fun and others were not? (Not trying to pick on you, but since you list specifics, lets be even more specific) I just don't think I can describe why exactly I liked one course more than another one. One just 'felt' better.

For me to describe why each of these courses is in my top 5 "funnest" would take too long. Sorry. With that said, each of these courses provides short/long par 4 holes, interesting green sites, unexpected bounces, natural beauty, and a ton of variety. The fairway movement and green sites at Rock Creek are fantastic. Each hole can and will play differently depending on pin location, wind...  I could explain easier over cocktails after a round. Too long to type here.
