Taken 35 years ago today at the Road Hole Tee
« on: May 15, 2010, 08:06:07 PM »

Scanning old slides into the computer I ran across this photo, which my father took 35 years ago today. I realized many of us don't know what the Road Hole tee shot looked like before they expanded the hotel. The non-logo tam met its demise years ago but it top did elevate me to 6'. No history about the female caddy to the right. I'm on the left. The fence mimics the outline of the old sheds, which had been torn down.

Disclaimer - this thread was started without knowing AG had bumped his thread. Without the technology leap he be on a cousin of Arnie's tractor pulling a gang.

It could have been if it had been taken about 120 yards short of the valley of sin.

Ha, ha - goo one, Mike. The guy in the middle looks like McCartney (the real one).  Excellent photo, Pete - thanks for sharing. Did you know then (or know now) how lucky you were to play logo-less? It's symbolic, I tell you - the game is different now that most of us are wearing some corporate logo on our heads!!

The guy in the middle is female. Will that change your opinion of Paul?

Pete - the person in the middle, with the black pants and sweater is female? Sorry. The shadows must've played tricks with my eyes. Not that it matters much - Paul always struck me as a well-balanced sort...

Pete,

That is a fabulous pic! I don't think I have ever previously seen a photo of TOC 17 without the original sheds or the current set up.

Thank you for posting that. I suspect there are a lot of other pics and memories for you from that trip!

See you in August and I will be in touch before then!

Regards,

Bob J

Peter, Great photo.

Can anyone post a pic with the current look?

Pete, is your middle name Griswold?

The guy on the right could be me in 1973.  Golfing in a denim jacket and Big Bells, ah, those were the days!  Thanks for sharing.

If you flip that picture over, on the back it is written Paul is dead.

Thanks, Leo, for posting the before and after.

It reminds me of a grand slice that managed to bound off of that metal roof and back to the fairway. In '73 it would have gotten what it deserved !

Yostie,
I'm glad the operation was a success. FYI the three people on the right are women, furthest right is caddying.

That's how the hole looked when I caddied in St. Andrews in 1982.  I think they built the replacement "sheds" before the 1990 Open.

That is an awesome picture, Pete.  I was actually in St. Andrews the following summer with my family.  We lost our camera the next day, and I am so glad we did!  :)

What a great picture...I want the full life story on the guy far right!  We have some great family pictures with similar clothing from the 70s.  Lots of good potential thread material from this- pictures of tee shots and approaches of well-known golf courses from years ago compared to today.

Awesome picture!

I wasnt even born but I have stolen some of my parents clothes that look like those for fancy dress party's!  My one small claim to fame is that I was born the day John Lennon was shot.  They told my mother when she was in labour and that was enough for me to come flying out.....I am terrible at music unfortunately.
2011 highlights- Royal Aberdeen, Loch Lomond, Moray Old, NGLA (always a pleasure), Muirfield Village, Saucon Valley, watching the new holes coming along at The Renaissance Club.
