Aronomink v Merion

Working the event last week and heard a bunch of banter from folks attending about which course is " better". Merion is too short, Aronomink is too long. Which has the better greens and surrounds. Which is more " memorable", better shot value and better design.

What say you folks? The two seem to be engaged in a friendly battle for who is best on the west side of the Delaware.

Which course is better, Cypress Point or Del Monte?


Not a contest in my opinion. Merion is outstanding in every way. Aronimink is a good course but not in the same class.

Merion.  It's not even close.
Merion is too short?  The best players in the world couldn't break par in 2013.  You can't judge distance by the scorecard!

If only Merion would presentbitself the way Aronimink currently does, we would have it (again) as the poster child for genius it had been for 70 or 80 years...

I saw some photos once of Merion as it was in the 1930s/40s, and it was truly striking: the sparkling architecture and the perfectly matched 'set up'/maintenance meld. To me those few pictures said more about CBM's influence than David's essay ever did. A modern-day NGLA is what it most 'presented itself' as, at least to me: an expansive, clean-lined 'design'.

I would have felt that this was not even a close comparison 15-20 years ago, to favor Merion by a long shot.


But now that the golf ball is going much further it seems to tip the scales to make the matchup much closer. Then when you add in the recent renovations to both courses. The renovations are more negative to Merion and more positive to AGC with respect to the member golfer.


BTW, I am very familiar with both golf courses.
If you had to pin me down to answer the question, I'll go with Merion........west
