Shaper Needed In April for China Project
« on: February 23, 2010, 10:23:40 AM »
Guys - I am looking for a shaper for a 27 hole project I am doing in Hunan Province, China.  Fast-track isn't really the most accurate term to describe this project.  We are wrapping up a grading plan that will result in more dirt I have moved in all my projects combined in the past twenty years.

Nonetheless, I am looking to bring a shaper over there and want someone who is somewhere close to the same page as I, design-wise (www.golf-architecture.com).  In other words, I don't want the type of guy who I worked with in Erie, Pa. a few years ago on a Tillinghast project.  When asked if he knew of Tilly, his response was "Yeah, I think I worked with him on a project in Hilton Head".  I also want to avoid the type of shaper who when asked his favorite golf course responded, "It has to begin and end with Augusta National".  Nothing against Augusta per se, but broader horizons are a plus.

The project is on ridiculous mountainous terrain with a proliferation of 2:1 slopes and will probably last 6 to 8 months with multiple contractors.  It may even necessitate multiple shapers.  Here are the basic requirements off the top of my head:

1)  Some experience in Asia, preferably China.
2)  An inclination toward a golden-age styling.
3)  Experience in severe topographic conditions.
4)  Can handle a very demanding schedule and client (but great to work with golf architect!).
5)  April availability.

If you know of someone who fits the bill, let me know.

Thanks

Marty Bonnar

Richard, reminds me of the time I was playing with a Director of the Rosedale Golf Club who told me I'd like the changes to a par three, "we brought Donald Ross in to alter the green".   He was close, it was Bob Cupp!

I would nominate Slag Bandoon but I don't think he speaks Chinese.   ;)

Do the Chinese even know about Margaritaville?

Just to let everyone still interested in the shaper's job in China, I have chosen Mick McShane for the job and he will start the second half of April.  Very excited about the prospects.  Thanks everyone who showed interest in the project.
