Why didn't Old Tom play Pebble Beach?
« on: February 17, 2010, 10:19:55 AM »

What would he say about Pebble Beach?

What would he say about NGLA?

Would he see his influence on CBM and DR?

What would he think about 17 at Sawgrass?

What would his fee be if alive today for designing a course?

Would he be todays top architect?

Would he build a course that was in a golfing community or a resort course?

Paul,

I was wondering the same.  I would guess that would be one reason, unless he was "Jesus-like" and could ressurect himself to come back and take a look!   ;D

For what he would say about 17 at Sawgrass, take a look at my tag line.

My guess he would go anywhere that would pay him, as long as it didn't take him too far from home for too long. And he would be polite and churchgoing and call every course he worked on one of the best in the country.  He'd be loathe to criticise someone else's work but would have firm opinions if you listened closely enough.

He actually designed at least one resort course, at Rosapenna.

There is one post war architect that I suspect closely resembles Old Tom in personality, and in his approach to GCA, and that's Eddie Hackett.

Another thing he would recognize is the influence he has had on greenskeeping.

IMHO  Old Tom would not recognize most of his own designs.

Anthony: what is your favourite Old Tom course?    what is your favourite Young Tom (Doak) course?

"Why didn't Old Tom play Pebble Beach?"

Hmmm, that's a tough one. But if I had to give it my best guess, and all things considered, I think I would say because he realized it had carts and cart paths.

I imagine the people lined up to pay the green fee would be shocking, even when adjusted for inflation and especially after Bretton Woods.

Was Old Tom the original "production house?"
