I imagine they would be a tad limited by the wind - severe greens on what is possibly one of the most exposed sites on the planet would be dangerous, especially with the Aussie propensity for getting the greens quickish

Several of the greens have had sections leveled for this very reason... In memory, the 1st. the front of the 7th, back of the 9th, the 14th, and the 17th were done in the last 7-8 years. The 18th was also rebuilt a little more level when they redesigned the hole, although with the bank behind the green and the clubhouse it was mostly protected from the elements

The last two pro tournaments out there (Modified Stableford Euro Tour events in 2003/2004) the winds stayed under 20mph the entire week.  I have played there in a southwesterly wind when one of the members marked and replaced his ball on the 3rd, then watched it blow uphilll off the green and 30 yds down a bank. I imagine they will be looking at the weather forecast very closely each day before cutting the greens, as they don't want the Shark saying "...it's "Royal Melbourne all over again" on National TV.

The course is pretty brown I must say... usually greening up pretty well by the end of Sept. NSWGC has their own water supply, but due to drought-like conditions the last time they had a tournament out there, they had to take some municipal water the week before the tournament and the Murdoch press ran their predictable 'silvertails deprive thirsty kids of water' stories..

Not wishing a repeat of this, perhaps they are marshaling their water resources to make sure it comes good only the month before the tournament. Gary Dempsey is the Supt. out there and he knows the course like the back of his hand, so I'm sure it will be looking 100% that week.

The work on 17 wasn't to remove a Mike Clayton-shaped dent, was it? ;D

Emil,

Thanks for the pics!  I have been wanting to see more of this place.  A few of the fw bunkers look like a definite full-shot penalty. #5 looks like you're hitting down a runway. I wanna absolutely pound a tee ball off that hole!

Nice pics Emil.  What camera did you use?

I'll be on the same tour as Ian.  Cannot wait. ;D  Most of the archies from Europe and the US are going to be brain-dead with jet lag on Monday pm when we play, so a good blast of fresh air will be just what we need.

The course looks fabulous.

Thanks for the great photo tour Emil!

Judging by your photos I believe I have found a new girlfriend in NSW.  I love the look of this place.  Graceful, breathtaking (for sure) yet terrorizing in all the right places, ie those beautiful deep pot bunkers.

I'd love to hit the shot into that 'quad' hole:

Now that looks fun!

Scott is quite the salesman.    ;)

Sydney and New South Wales are "only" about 600 miles from the Tasmanian site of the March event.  NSW works if you're using Sydney as your gateway to Australia, but what about Melbourne and the Sand Belt courses?

If I sound grouchy, it's only because I'm trying to figure out a way to go on the March trip but not spend two or more weeks.  Things are pretty spread out.

Emil's photos just make things that much tougher for me.

John,

Melbourne is an easy - and better - base.  Sydney and Tasmania are only an hour's flight from Melbourne - as is Adelaide.

There are three airlines that fly to Sydney, with numerous flights daily. NSW is an easy day trip. Still daylight saving at that time of year too.

There are less flights to Tassie from Melbourne, but still quite a few.

Given that you probably will have to fly into Sydney anyway to get to and from Melbourne or anywhere else, it would be easy to stay there for a day or so, play NSW, come down to Melbourne for a few days, then on down to Tassie.

Mark,
I haven't looked at flight schedules, but never would have thought of NSW as a practical day trip from either Melbourne or Launceston.  Thanks for the info.

John,

As a for instance, Qantas has 10 flights Mon-Fri ex Melboune that arrive in Sydney by 10.30am, and 6 flights back from 6pm onwards.

If you have time for anything other than golf you're mad not to spend spare time in Sydney anyway

Scott,

Are you saying Mr. Clayton has put on a pound or two since his playing prime?

Nevertheless,  the ball would not stay on the near right side of this green with any sort of wind blowing. In fact you could often putt up to the hole from the edge of the green and watch it roll back to your feet.

To fix it, they buried a bunch of Mike Clayton-sized people under the green there and returfed about 15% of the putting surface. Kind of the same deal on the 7th green which makes the false front more defined on that green. IMHO, the 7th is the best straight par 4 on the course.

True, Anthony, NSW is definitely masculine ;D

Robin,

I use a Canon SX110 IS. Its a liitle too big for a pocket but playing around with the 10x Optical zoom is loads of fun (see last pic of photo tour). Its very good value for money.

Scott,

I never tire of watching that video :P
