I imagine they would be a tad limited by the wind - severe greens on what is possibly one of the most exposed sites on the planet would be dangerous, especially with the Aussie propensity for getting the greens quickish
Several of the greens have had sections leveled for this very reason... In memory, the 1st. the front of the 7th, back of the 9th, the 14th, and the 17th were done in the last 7-8 years. The 18th was also rebuilt a little more level when they redesigned the hole, although with the bank behind the green and the clubhouse it was mostly protected from the elements
The last two pro tournaments out there (Modified Stableford Euro Tour events in 2003/2004) the winds stayed under 20mph the entire week. I have played there in a southwesterly wind when one of the members marked and replaced his ball on the 3rd, then watched it blow uphilll off the green and 30 yds down a bank. I imagine they will be looking at the weather forecast very closely each day before cutting the greens, as they don't want the Shark saying "...it's "Royal Melbourne all over again" on National TV.
The course is pretty brown I must say... usually greening up pretty well by the end of Sept. NSWGC has their own water supply, but due to drought-like conditions the last time they had a tournament out there, they had to take some municipal water the week before the tournament and the Murdoch press ran their predictable 'silvertails deprive thirsty kids of water' stories..
Not wishing a repeat of this, perhaps they are marshaling their water resources to make sure it comes good only the month before the tournament. Gary Dempsey is the Supt. out there and he knows the course like the back of his hand, so I'm sure it will be looking 100% that week.
