An Update on GCA's Dave Kemp
« on: September 14, 2009, 10:21:04 AM »
Friends,

GCA Member Dave Kemp has recently suffered a serious illness which has left him paralyzed. In order to assist Dave and his Family begin to rebuild their lives, we are holding a Golf Tournament on September 25th at the Bradford Highlands.

Robert Thompson and I are going to be attending this event and would love to have two others make our group a foresome. We are also currently working on putting together a couple of great auction items.

If you are interested in playing with us give me a call – the cost is $150 per person - my email is on my profile and I’m in today.

Robert and I will also put on another Toronto GCA get together this fall – and we plan to use this as a fundraiser for Dave.

If you can join us or are interested in helping Dave out, please give me an email or call.

Best to all of you,

Ian Andrew

Bumping.

I can't make this event, but I'd be willing to chip in to sponsor someone else who can. PM me if you're interested.

Gents,

We have our foursome already. Thanks.

I have many inquiries about donating. A group of us have got together to start an auction on his behalf. When organized, I’ll come back to this group with a link for both bids and for donations if you feel you would like to help.

I thank many of you for contacting me by email and the many generous offers that have been made. It has started the ball rolling on what we can do to help.

George,

There will be some cool prizes at the event next week -

As I mentioned to Ian, I'm going to tap into my network of contacts to see what I can arrange -- but I'm hoping I can come up with some neat stuff. Dave is one of the good guys, and I always enjoy talking to him about the industry. I think he's made almost all of our Toronto GCA outings, including our most recent event at Otter Creek where I played 9 holes with him.

If you are reading this, Dave, my thoughts are with you and your family.

I'm at a loss for words.  Our family has received a tremendous amount of support from every corner imaginable and now this.  I received an email of well wishes from Ian today and then I check in here as I do on a semi regular basis and see this post.  It goes beyond anything I could have imagined.  However I should not be surprised I suppose as a common passion amongst a group of strangers (who some later become friends) has way of bringing out the best in us.  While it is highly doubtful that I will ever play golf again my interest in golf course design will always remain.

Take care all and I will continue to stop by here to see what is being discussed.

Dave,

I had the pleasure of your company for 18 holes earlier this year at Otter Creek and I was looking forward to the next Toronto GCA event so we could renew acquaintances.  You and your family will be in my thoughts...

If there is another fundraising event later this fall, count me in as a likely participant.

First up - you guys are awesome - I'll get back to you real soon about what we will try to do for Dave.
I have a few collected items - that will become part of an auction to help him out.

It appears that I need a 4th for Friday.
Any of the Toronto GCA available?

Yes,

George - if your serious about coming up.

I'll pay for your spot and put you up for Thursday and Friday night.

Or pick you up from the airport if your flying in.

Gentlemen,

I have contacted Dave's brother and hope to have some details about where people can send a donation to help Dave's family. I was not comfortable collecting the donations - and would rather have someone within the family receive them and send them onto Dave.

I will be speaking with the family and friends from where he worked on the 25th.
Our plan is to carry out an auction with all proceeds going to Dave. Part of which I hope to do on GCA with Ran's permission.

My copy of Doak’s Confidential Guide will be available along with a flag from Pine Valley. I have flags from NLGA, Merion and other courses that will be available too. I’ll post all this on GCA – because I think this will be the right audience. I should have a few other odds and ends that people would desire too. I try something interesting from Mike too.

I’ll get back to you with the details.

Regards,

Ian

I was asked about American or other checks.

All checks are fine - the bank will do a quick conversion into Canadian Currancy.

Bumping.

I'm hoping to attend, just need a few things to fall properly.

Please everyone take note of Ian's post #13, with the address for donations.

I thought I would share an update on Dave – who surprised us all by showing for around an hour at the tournament yesterday.

Yesterday’s golf tournament put together by Dave’s friends. It was oversold with 180 people playing in the event. The people at Highlands did a remarkable job making sure everything was done to help Dave. While it was busy out there – it was a fun event with lots of laughs – everyone was there for one reason only. There were lots of people who simply showed up and gave a donation to the event. The auction was huge and some really incredibly one of a kind things were brought along and auctioned off.

Dave’s father, brother, sister and both his boys all played in the event. I was lucky enough to talk with each of them and have dinner with his oldest son. His oldest son works at Bond Head Golf Course and is taking Golf management at college. He’ll do very well in this industry. Dave’s friends have already helped with modifications to the house and continue to work on it this week-end in order for Dave to be able to get around the house easier.

Dave surprised us all by showing up for around an hour. Dave is overwhelmed by the response and was all smiles. He was excited to see friends and spent lots of time talking to everyone. As his father said he’ll need some time to adjust, but Dave is working hard to adjust and get on with enjoying his life and his wonderful family.

If Dave’s up to it, TJ and I hope to have our winter Toronto GCA get together near Bradford so that Dave can join us. I must say yesterday was a wonderful day. Dave is surrounded by a wonderful family and a great set of friends who will do whatever it takes to help out.

Thanks to so many of you on GCA who have stepped up to help out. We have one more event planned and that is an online auction (which I’ll provide a link to) of some pretty amazing one time opportunities.

Thank you all so much,

Ian Andrew
