The Colonel
« on: April 20, 2009, 09:39:34 AM »
Another pseudonym inquiry.

Who used the pen name "The Colonel" in Golf (a USGA sponsored periodical) from about 1900 through 1910? For a time he had a regular monthly column.

This does not appear to be the same "Colonel" who covered golf happenings in the US south about a decade later for other magazines.

Any help is much appreciated.

Bob

Bob, any chance it is the Colonel Morrell, mentioned in 4th 5th paragraphs in the "history" section of above?

RJ -

Thanks. Morrell is possible. I'm not able to rule any one out.

I should have mentioned in my first post that The Colonel seemed very comfortable using Latin. Some of the titles to his articles were Latin phrases.

Does that ring any bells?

Might it have been Simon Carr, the Jesuit priest?

Bob, actually I haven't read more than a smattering of those old articles of writers using various pseudonyms in the old pubs.  But, that Latin connection is very interesting.  Didn't Christoph Meister mention some months back that Fr. Carr was noted as a US player in an article about one of the old tournaments held in Germany or Italy in the 20s?

Bob:

I saw that pseudonym in the same early periodical you did a bit less than a year ago and I had the very same question you did----with zero answer, I'm sorry to say.

I guess Father Simon Carr is a decent possibility because he sure was around prominently way back in that day you're mentioning. Carr was a very good player who won our biggest two tournaments around here back then, and Carr did write at least one pretty significant article about Pine Valley for a golf magazine in 1914 but under his own name.

Along with W.P Smith, Carr seemed to be Crump's best friend at least around Pine Valley and the two of them were recognized by the club to have known more about the details of what Crump was doing and thinking about the course than any others down there.

I'll read through those "Colonel" articles to see if I can pick anything leading up from them.
