Forward tee locations
« on: March 23, 2009, 12:50:20 PM »
We are adding a set of forward tees to our course where current teesets range from 5500-6900 yards.  I know there are suggested recommendations for yardages that conform to junior golf etc.  Would anyone know these numbers off the top of their head?  I have already been on the USGA and First tee websites and thought that GCA might be the best place to find the information we seek.

Our goal is to find yardages that conform to our junior golf program while also catering to other markets such as ladies/beginners/seniors etc.  Our course is a RTJ Sr, designed for difficult par, easy bogey, yada yada..  It discourages many high handicappers who choose to play the "other" club on the island mainly due to the difficulty( length, forced carries, lots of water, 98 bunkers, etc)  Conversely, a large part of our financial support comes from low handicappers/long hitters etc, so softening the course in any other way is not an option.

I am open to all ideas, comments, criticisms, etc that may assist in our decision making process.  Thanks in advance.

There are two different issues here I think.

First is a set of forward tees for ladies and seniors.  Everything I've seen from architects on this site lately suggests 4800 yards as a good yardage for these forward tees.

Second is junior tees.  We have a set of these at Pensacola CC that are little flush circles set in the fairway from say 80-120 yards from each green and are for junior / First Tee use.

So the forward tees need a formal tee, the junior /. First Tee tees just a reasonably level spot way down the fairway.

David,
I like what Bill is saying.  Save your club a lot of $$$ and don't construct new tees - just do what he said.

Dan, they may have to construct 18 new tees if there aren't existing tees that total 4800 from the front.

put them on the fringe.
fairly level and speeds up play

David, why not have the course rated from the 200 yard markers?

This would give you teeing locations between 220 and 180 yards on each hole.

First of all playing Buccaneer over Carambola is nuts, no comparison in facilities there. One neat view of St. Thomas does not a golf course make.

As for the tees perhpas you can do a couple of things. Construct new tees where absolutely necessary cutting yardage to around 4400 yards then create a "new course" with the exisiting tees that plays around 5000, comfortable for the clientele you mention while still sreating an option short enough for most juniors.

I bet you can 4-5 holes where new construction is not required (hole is short enough) and a few more where the corner of the fairway cut can be worked into looking like a quasi natural location for a forward tee.

Great resources, thank you gentlemen.  We do actually currently have a set of "junior tees", more like temporary tees located at the beginnings of most fairways.  Juniors have no problem playing them., at least the young ones.  Adults however tend to shy away from them even though they are probably at the yardage that best suits their handicap/length.   I do agree though for the prices we are charging "all" guests deserve formal tee areas.
