cannot believe they are calling it "The Wachovia" in Charlotte again. 

the merger with Wells Fargo closes on 12/31/08 and Wachovia basically ceases to exist at that time. 

the message here is that Wells Fargo will not sponsor the event going forward and yet another sponsor slot will need to be filled for the '10 sched.

The Feds might be aware of the largesse showered on the contestants, caddies and officials at the "Wachovia" tournament. Messrs Waxman and crowd would crow mightily to see it happen again.

"largesse" certainly describes the situation accurately. 

locally there's some thought Bank of America might pick the event up starting in '10 but I wonder if they might decline the sponsorship for just the reasons you mention.
