Driveable par 4 in majors
« on: August 16, 2009, 07:22:38 PM »
Do they have any place in major championships? Or should they be on the back nine so late?

Will the USGA or PGA change their thinking after the effect on the outcome of the PGA?

It certainly seems to be the thing to do lately.  I like it...especially if the number you could make is big if you don't pull it off.

  Agreed simply.

Thinking about this earlier today. Seems like taking a drive and pitch hole and making it reachable from the tee, with birdie almost a certanty if the tee ball isn't on the green is not enough. If he misses the green, the player should have to make a great up and down.

17 at Oakmont (I think it was 17) seemed to be a great one.  The one at TP last year didn't quite work so well.

I would say if the course is built that way then sure.  Making a drivable par 4 out of a hole that was not designed that way is stupid IMO.

I take issue with you saying "With what happened today?"  What do you mean by that?

If they shortened the hole today the pga created the possibility of the eagle that happened. At 352 it takes a huge poke to get there.

Isn't today's occurence the exact reason they moved the tees up? To create the excitement of an eagle or a big momentum swing?

I thought it was an absolutely fantastic move.  The move to 300 yards accomplished exactly what was intended...an amazing chip for eagle, and Tiger having to knock-down a huge pressure 12 foot birdie.....with both players in contention in the final group!

I like them, I think the players like them and I'm pretty sure the gallery loves it.  I like holes that'll have pro's hitting different shots off the tee.  There is no rule that says they have to hit driver.  They can hit two 8 irons.  Without looking I'm sure somebody layed up today.  Its better then no brain set ups.
Yang's chip in was a great shot, and the course set up or the fact that he was greenside on a par 4 changes that.
I do agree that the holes that are designed to be shorter par4's are better then long par4's that are just played from the ladies tee's.

I liked the hole and where it showed up in the lineup after playing the brutal 12th and 13th.

However, this really wasn't a risk/reward hole, it was all reward as I don't recall anyone taking worse than a par here.  Certainly something like PD #6 would have been funner to watch but perhaps next time they can replace that front bunker with a pond to make it more true risk/reward!!   ;D

I guess at these guy's level the "risk" is making a four.

It certainly is the new hot trend! They just played the Met Am at my course (Hackensack) and played out shortest par 4 from the front tees. Pretty cool since the green is aboy 80% encircled by a bunker.

Pebble Beach #8 - Move the tee up to make it blind, drivable, and all carry.  Let's get it done for 2010.
