Re: Kavanaugh....pray tell, what on earth does the "pro" do for the club?

As the world flattens, the relevance of the pro is getting squashed. It started when they lost their monopoly over the equipment market. They still have a PR function as promoters of the game (through lessons, etc.), as the public face of clubs, and as communication hubs within clubs, but their future looks bleak. I think golf loses something as the stature of the pro wanes, but I'm not sure what. I'm not sure I could say what value they truly add, from a management perspective, as opposed to being just one of the hired help. Some of their decline has been self inflicted. Their addiction to power carts, in particular, sends a very poor message to our youth.

For those of us that have never belonged to a private club, just what exactly does a green chairman do?

It depends on the club.  At ours the Super reports to the Greens Committee Chairman.  The Chair also runs the Greens Committee meetings and represents the Committee at Board meetings.  He will work with the Super on financing and other issues.  He also has a hand in any course changes.

I think the job varies with the club, but that is the gist of it.
The golf ball is like a woman, you have to talk it on the off chance it might listen.

Depends on the club and the Green Chairman. In a member-owned club, one of the best/most important things he can do is to run interference for the Super and Head Pro with the members-explaining the "why's" and "why nots".These guys are hired because they usually know what they're supposed to do.
