The Dundee Colt
« on: March 21, 2006, 12:36:19 PM »
On the Colt Association website, I noticed a reference to an unresearched (probably NLE) Course in Dundee (Scotland, not Florida I assume...!)
Can anyone - maybe with a copy of Colt & Co - give me any clues or more info?
I'm only a half hour from Dundee and would love to find some Henry Shap up there!

I thought the Dundee Colt was that young filly that won first time out at Ayr and was then sold straight off to some Arab multi-millionaire (Osam bin something comes to mind) for breeding purposes.  I seem to recall reading somewhere that he had elaborate scheme in mind which required lots of horse-power.  Sorry I can't be more specific.

Martin- Looked in little "Annexe," as they call it, in the back of Colt & Co. & could find nothing listed in Dundee.  Sorry........

Could it be that he perhaps visited either Camperdown or Downfield?
I don't recall much of a Colt look about either of them, but you never know...

Yes, Colt and Co do claim a new course design in Dundee (it's not in the Hawtree book).  I have never tracked it down and thought perhaps Camperdown or Caird Park.

Actually I don't think Camperdown can be it since that's a 1950s design.  Caird Park is 1923 so perhaps that's it?

Another one they list as NLE was at Southend.  Which will surprise people as until now there's never been anything interesting about Southend, apart from a pier which goes 1 mile out over Thames Mud.  I've written to the local historical society but so far no reply.

Anyone know anything?

I hope to share some really exciting info on this subject fairly soon.

In the meantime, what is going on with the Colt Assoc website? Hasn't been updated in four years...no new articles...no news...who is looking after it?

Don't we have any members as posters here?

Maybe some of us should consider joining and re-invigorating the place?

Thoughts...?

Martin I think there's a clue is in the address. I have mentioned it here before that this November the Stoke Poges Secretary, a Mr Pugh,  will be publishing a new book on Colt with the help of one Bruce Critchley (I know how you respect the BSkyB guys ::)0.

So please do tell us more about Colt in Scotland.

Here's the 18th in Southend  which featured donut bunkers either side of the 18th green a full decade before he gave one to the Honourable Edinburgh Chappie's.

Man oh man it "pished" down the day I finally got to play it. I will return and tell the story...

Patience, dear boy, patience... ;D All in good time (I need to go take some pics!)

Have just returned from a weekend in bonnie Ireland (Belfast - Donegal) and we had rain of positively biblical proportion too. Luckily, I wasn't chasing the wee white ball around but rather the tall black glass!!! Yum! (Great wedding too - thanks Tommy and Megan, have a GREAT life together).

I believe the course is at Caird Park, designed in 1923.
