Olivas Links Golf
« on: October 13, 2008, 10:03:32 PM »
This course and the nearby Buenaventura Golf Course were recently remodeled by Forrest Richardson in 2005.Buenaventura was designed by William P. Bell and William F. Bell and opened in 1949.Olivas Park was designed by William F. Bell and opened in 1969.These courses are owned by the city of Ventura,California. Both courses are very different at present.I played Olivas a few weeks ago and was completely thrilled with this links type course. With a two club wind this was all the fun of Scotland without the jet lag.Unfortunately I did not have my camera in my bag, therefore no photos.I rate this course at a Doak 6 and my friend rated the course at a 6.5.Given the fee of $30 to play and $10 for a cart this is the best bargain I've found for quality golf.As the greens had only partially healed from verticutting our fee was $20 for the day.I'll be back to play Buenaventura.
Has anyone else played these courses?
Also,congratulations to Forrest.

Yancey, I completely agree with you. I thought Forrest did a terrific job. I especially liked the stretch of 10-13. Really fun, a good taste of links golf for the SoCal public golfer and a nice price. Makes for a nice daily-double with Rustic Canyon. It's jumped high onto my list of recommendations of places to play in SoCal when people ask. Now, if it could just be a little more on the firm side...

Wholeheartedly, agree about Olivas. I've already raved about the course a bit too much but bravo again to Forrest.

The combo of Rustic and Olivas does make Doakable day. Throw in Soule Park in nearby Ojai and you got a trifecta of affordable, quality courses near each other. Soule is a bit firmer (not counting the first two holes) than Olivas and despite some objectionable changes to placate the men's club, I find it comparable to Olivas on a Doak scale.

Olivas sister course, Buenavnetura, is much less appealing on nearly all fronts. It became my home course while Olivas was under construction but it's shortness and softness make it far less appealing. I use Buena as an alternative primarily for practice  since it is often vacant since Olivas reopened.

One last comment of Olivas. On really hot days, or even firestorm times of the year like now,  Olivas is a great alternative for those of us not fond of the heat. It's less than a mile from the ocean keeping its temperature significantly lower than Rustic or Soule. In the summer it's not unusual to have a 20+ degree difference between the inland Rustic or Soule when compared to Olivas with a refreshing ocean breeze.
