Aerial of the Day #134 - 2 Jul 2002

Normally I'd just show the "primary" or "tournament" 18 at
courses like this, but I just decided to show all 27 holes here
for today.  It might become the norm, for time's sake.

Those with a knowledge of past AOTDs in this area might get
thrown off for a certain reason.

Do the handful of squiggly, free-form bunker shapes REALLY look to be similar to the work done at the US Open Course???

I don't see it at all.

I should also mention that I understand that a much needed tree-clearing program has begun!

I agree, they don't!  And I know GeoffC does too; he visited the course last week.

Fine set of greens there, good variety and intricate (best was maybe 2nd West).

It's appropriate that the course has lots of trees.  I guess the
center of a hill runs through it, too?

This course was featured on TV last year.  "The World's
Greatest Athlete of the First Half of the 20th Century"
gambled and came up short here.

They took out as many as 500 trees this past winter and the vistas across the course are quite nice.  Also, the ridge running through the course utilized in quite a few holes can be clearly seen from adjacent holes.

Many thanks to my kind host last week.  It was a great day.

One hole on this course can really "nickel and dime" you to death without precise shotmaking.

I don't get either of the last two clues.

Nickle and dime must refer to a particular hole's name?

Kodak is located in Roch, NY, this one is in a neighboring
state.  Eastman?  Picture?  Film?  Camera?  Don't get it.  Is
there a Kodak plant near here?

Did Burbeck design this course, too?

I think i may have it now.
i'm guessing that the nickel and dime reference refers to a name of a hole where you can make 5 just as easily as you can make 10. sort of like the "2 and 20" hole at Engineers

The tee to the Nickel and dime hole appears at the very bottom of the picture.  An almost driveable uphill par 4 with a two tiered green you need to walk single file on.

The tree removal has been dramatic, hopefully, it will continue.

Mike Cirba, you need to get on the ground for better views.

Hmmm.  A little confused.  Must be in NJ or MA.  If NJ, Byron
Nelson was an assistant pro here.  If MA, then there's some
really awesome clues (e.g. "we met for a ride") going unused!

I guess NJ as I think my MA guess was a previous AOTD.
Also, this one only has 1 clubhouse.

I've been "on the ground" as recently as last October.  It's lovely in the fall, as you know.  

I'm sure I won't be able to sway you with a majority vote, but GeoffreyC and Paul Turner agree with me.  ;)

Back from a meeting.

This is Tillinghast's Ridgewood CC, in Paramus, NJ.  
Ridgewood hosted last year's Senior PGA Championship, won
by Tom Watson.  Jim Thorpe ("Greatest athlete... ") gambled
on 17 and hit driver from fairway deep in the woods and lost
lead.

other clues:

"center of hill" = "ridge"

"lots of trees" = "wood"

"Burbeck" = Tillie  ;D
