Wisconsin's Rainbow Springs fades into history
« on: August 07, 2008, 10:49:03 AM »
One of the more interesting golf course developments in these parts -- Rainbow Springs in outer suburban Milwaukee -- will go by the wayside as part of a large state land purchase:

Most of the interesting details about the cursed history of the project are in the story. But this was and still is an interesting and tough course. Built by an amateur architect, with no sand traps, it once hosted a major stop on the LPGA Tour (Women's Western Open) back in the 1960s. No less a golfer than Mickey Wright won the tournmant with a 4-day total of 302 -- the highest score that year on the LPGA Tour. A course with some quirk and toughness.

It's really too bad to see another course close. Rainbow Springs was nailed by some major flooding in early summer.

Anthony:

Most of Southern Wisconsin was hit by flooding this June -- record rains all over the place. Flooding is an interesting piece of this property, however -- the state did want to keep it largely undeveloped, in part because of some watershed and other issues.

Hard to tell whether Rainbow Springs is part of a larger trend or not. It may be sui generis; RS the course was always tied to the larger project, which for a lot of odd reasons never took hold. But, I also have a sense that these sorts of mid-tier courses -- not at the level of the Kohler courses, the Bog or other high-end stuff, but more expensive than the muni's and moderate-free daily publics -- are really getting squeezed.
