Ross in MA
« on: July 19, 2008, 12:36:34 PM »
Pat's question about Ross in Li got me thinking about his body of work in ma.

He was very prolific and got to work on some great properties, yet he lost two of the most visible projects in the 20 s. The expansion / upgrade of the country club and kittansett.

Given the ties between the two clubs I can see why loosing one would kill his chances at the other, but given his connections and ties to the area, why did he not get those projects?

John:

Don't forget William Flynn grew up right around Boston (Milton, Mass)---and he was quite the athlete, and he knew Quimet well--played golf against him in HS.

Ross proposed an additional 18 holes for The Country Club in Brookline.  It was not accepted.  Several years later, Flynn proposed redesigning 2 holes on the existing course, many of the greens and most of the bunkers.  That was accepted and implemented.  The original front nine was intact, the back nine was integrated with the new nine holes.  They were never meant to be a separate nine.  In this manner, there were three loops of nine holes of near equal challenge beginning and terminating near the locker rooms.

Flynn routed and designed Kittansett.  Wilson was up there for 2 days during Flynn's first walk around.  On another thread, Tom MacWood attributed Kittansett to Wilson, Flynn and Hood.  In reality, he has no idea what, if anything, Wilson and Hood did at Kittansett.  As far as can be determined with evidence amassed today, Hood only oversaw the construction of Kittansett according to Flynn's plans.  Wilson and Flynn probably shared concepts during the two days the two were up there together.  There is no way of knowing if Wilson contributed anything specific.  MacWood's lists are not based on any real understanding that I can determine.  Does MacWood know when Flynn planned the work at The Country Club and what it entailed?  I doubt it.

I believe that Ross designed another 9 not 18 on what is currently the Pine Mannor college, to make TCC a 36 hole club

Tom - Thanks for the reminder - I didn't realize that Flynn was from Boston when I made this post, but I do recall hearing that previously.

The Kittansett club history states:

Several leading experts we're consulted on design of a golf course. Among them we're Donald Ross, a leading golf architect at the time. Mr. Ross came to Marion and advised the trustees.

Did he produce a routing or was it just a consultation? Given the difficulty in construction, i may have been a Q&A on Could we build a golf course here? This was most likely the summer of '22.

Brad's book on Ross says his plan for the 2nd 18 @ TCC was done in 1921. Was it rejected immediately or was there

Let me add one other point - I am not trying to make a case that these course we're not designed by their architects of record.

Simply wondering how & why Ross never got these prestigious jobs.
