The marvellous St Andrews Golf Company

Caution: Unashamed Plug

I'm contemplating a purchase of a new set of irons, so, last weekend, Nancy and I took a spin around the county to various outlets from pro shops, big retailers, our golf pro and so on eventually ending up in St Andrews.

Just outside the town in the wee village of Largoward we stopped at the aforementioned company premises.

I've never been in before, but I most certainly will be again. It is MAGICAL! Six men good and true employ ancient skills and modern machinery in the manufacture of wonderfully accurate replicas (VERY playable!) of clubs, balls and bags. They also have the rights to the old 'George Nicoll' name - which any scottish golfer of a certain vintage knows and loves. Even a very young chap like me had one or two Nicolls in the bag as a youngster.

The young fellow who showed us around was just a gem. He was so enamoured of the place as a child that he spent all his time there - eventually just being told: "You spend so much time here, we might as well give you a job"!!!

The smells and sights of hickory and persimmon, of enamels, leather and brass polish are heavenly. The racks of beautiful clubs a sight for sore eyes. They make the set of Bobby Jones clubs which you may have seen in Auchterlonies is you've been in St Andrews. (Two and a half grand! - but gorgeous!)

I am so sorry that I hadn't known about the place before BUDA as I most certainly would have insisted on a visit.

Any GCAers coming to Fife are HIGHLY recommended to swing by the place (and to maybe buy a wee memento or two).

Plug over. Thank you for your kind attention.

Just wondering.  Why would you need a new set of irons?   ???

Unka Bill,
I've been very happy with my Supersteels since I got them (nearly ten years ago?), but I've been becoming less and less enamoured with the brown bubble shafts in them. They look really tired and a bit dated now. (not that there's anything inherently wrong with 'old' things ;D))
I'd quite like to get back to steel shafts. I did think about just getting them re-shafted, but, at about 25 to 30 quid a time, that's about as expensive as a new set anyway!!
best,
neffers Mart.

Just kidding.  ;)

I am no one to talk about new irons, having averaged a new set every other year for several years (trying to buy a swing perhaps?).

And don't get me started on drivers..........

I'm only on my fourth or fifth set - in my lifetime!!
It is funny though as two of my playing buddies bought my old sets off me and are still playing with them, so it's kinda like the divorced dad getting to see his kids at the weekend!!
Drivers on the other hand are defo more like wimmin. Deep love at the beginning of the relationship can turn pretty ugly after they break your heart once or twice. :'( ;D
