The Essential Perry Maxwell?
« on: June 19, 2014, 04:57:41 AM »
Definitely:

Dornick Hills
Old Town
Augusta
Oklahoma City G&CC
Crystal Downs
Colonial (Horrible Horseshoe)
Prairie Dunes
Southern Hills

Possibly?

Iowa State
U. Michigan
Twin Hills

Paging Chris Clouser and Ed Oden:  the uniformed dwarf in the Polo Lounge has the white courtesy phone and is hollering this must be the call you've been waiting for all this time ;D ;D

Seriously though, have I left anything essential off this list?  Is anything on the list that should be removed?

I'm in pretty good shape having played 7/8 on the top list.  Can't wait to see the eighth :o ;D  I' wondering about the bottom three.  I don't think we've ever had anybody profile Iowa State, I don't hear much discussion of that at all.

Jay,

I would say Twin Hills is a must to be on that list.  I liked it a lot.  U of M as well.  Iowa State (Veenker Memorial) has been changed significantly over the years.  If you are ever going through Iowa, see it.  Omaha CC, even though he only did a renovation of a part of the course, would be nice.

If you have trips to Oklahoma in mind, I think Hillcrest in Bartlesville, Muskogee, and Oakwood in Enid would be nice places to visit.  Hillcrest in particular sounds like it was impressive to many at the ASGCA meetings.  One course I still have not seen that I would like is the Lakewood course in Mobile.  Bayou DeSiard is supposedly nice as well, but I haven't been to Louisiana.  The only other one I can think of would the Oak Cliff course now called Golf Club of Dallas.

Some other people can chime in with their thoughts.  Interested to see what Mark Saltzman and Craig E. think as well.

Thanks Chris.  As always, your book is a terrific research resource.

Oklahoma will be on the list next time I return to Texas, hopefully within a year.  LOVE OCGCC!!!  So awesome. Can't wait to see the restoration/renovation.  Iowa State is now called Veenker Memorial now?  Is that right?

Fantastic golf course, one I really enjoyed playing.
Some fascinating choices in the routing that I thought were slightly unusual but excellent decisions.
I would seek out the course.

Sorry for being late to the game.  I definitely agree that Twin Hills and Hillcrest belong on the list.  Oakwood is really interesting too since it is both a fine golf course and, to my knowledge, essentially unchanged.  I know that Tiger Bernhardt (God rest his soul) praised Bayou DeSiard as a hidden gem but, like Chris, I haven't been there yet.

Maxwell isn't quite the household name as Ross, Tilly and some of the other ODG's.  Plus much of his original work isn't in major markets.  So the recent restoration craze has largely passed him by.  While I'm hoping that Old Town and, to a lesser extent, Hillcrest will change that, sadly, all too many of his courses have already been irreversibly altered.  For example, Melrose should be on the "essential" list since it was the course that put Maxwell on the map and was by all accounts an exceptional design.  Unfortunately, that course is pretty much long gone.

Jay, still think you ought to find one of his remaining low budget courses in KS or OK, perhaps with sand greens.....

Bayou DeSiard and Oak Cliff have been remodeled well out of the PM style, I think.

I wonder if the original Melrose in Philly would qualify . . . so different now.
