Wannamoissett is a must see in the Providence area.
I had to stop by Metacomet once, but didn't play it or see most of the course.  Heard and read good things about it, but others on this site could shed some light on it.

Pete

Thanks.  Wannamoisett and Metacomet are both fantastic, but am looking for someplace that we haven't already seen.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks

If you're at Kittanset stop and see Thomas' little nine hole Marion GC. It's like looking at baby Picasso on crayons.

Paul,
You may already know these places, but here are some that don't get much attention it seems?

Sakonnet Golf Club- Little Compton, RI--Donald Ross' old vacation spot, started a few holes for his wife, and grew from there. There was some funky renovation done to a few holes. I am a big fan.

Rhode Island Country Club- Barrington, Rhode Island-- Donald Ross, they hold the CVS Charity Classic here, fun golf course to play. Some holes on the Narragansett Bay. Sporty.

Wanumetonomy Golf Club- On Aquidneck Island where Newport CC is-- Good fun Seth Raynor. Some very interesting green complexes. Fun to play, and a great club that 'gets it'.

I agree on Wanumetonomy-Ron Prichard did a nice redo a few years back, he sharpened up the bunkers and added a few more-a peek at the Biarritz green is worth the visit.

Paul,

I'd stay at Kittansett.  Why head to Providence at all?  ;D

Triggs Memorial is a pretty decent Ross muni in Providence itself...

It's not to the level of the private courses in the state, but probably #2 (if not #1) public behind Newport National.  The conditions are ok, and there still is quite a bit of quirk in evidence.
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

Paul:
Although it's a slight diversion, I would check out Sakonnet in Little Compton, RI. Ross summered in Little Compton, so he tinkered quite a bit with Sakonnet. But the real reason I would check it out is that Gil Hanse just designed two new holes on an oceanside parcel. When Ross originally laid out plans for the course, he had assumed the club owned the parcel and had made drawings for two holes there. Turns out the club didn't own the property. Around 2002, the club acquired the parcel and Hanse designed the holes off of Ross' sketches that had never been constructed because of the ownership confusion.  An interesting diversion if you have the time.

CC of New Bedford is definetly worth a look, the original nine holes by Park and nine holes added by Ross, with a recent restoration by Mungeam.

Paul,

Definetly check out Marion - it's low key and fun.

The other place to check out is Newport National. I loved it and think it's the best public access course in New England.

Newport National is quite nice, and challenging, and all that.

But it's not the #1 public in New England.  I would say its in the top 10 though.  Red Tail, Taconic, the Balsams, Sunday River (I haven't been), Rutland, Wintonbury...and others would be in the running.
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

Paul,

Not sure about architectural merit,  but if that is all you are interested in, then you might want to miss Highland Links G.C. If however, you want to have a a pleasant game and test yourself in the wind, try it, you may well like it.

I think it is all of $30.00 for two trips around the nine.

The Links in Truro (out on the cape) is way out of the way but worth it as far as I am concerned; the view from atop the lighthouse is worth the fee. Also, as I recall the course is very old (circa 1892).  If you go there, Eastward Ho! is an absolute must.

As a member at Sakonnet, I would say that it is worth it but it is also way out of the way.  The first hole is a great starting hole and the second is spectacular.  If you do go to Little Compton, also check out Acoaxet Golf Club in the neighboring town of Westport.

It has been a few years, but I thought Fall River had some cool holes.  It was the quirkiest course I had played in a long time.

I was waiting for someone to say Taconic next.  ;D

Here is the reality of road trip logistics, you are looking at Carnegie Abbey (Steele), Newport National (best public access), Rhode Island CC, that 9 holer in Westport, MA which looks very cool when I went to a wedding there and Sakonnet.

Plymouth, Ma has lots of options leading with Olde Sandwich and is not too far away. If you want to jump over the bridge to The Inner Cape, Pocasset Golf Club would be my darkhorse and Woods Hole is a bit farther. From Marion to the Cape bridges is farther than it looks however.

Hi Mike,

I've always been very intrigued by Woods Hole.  Their website has hole-by-hole pics, and it looks like some wild stuff, making up for the 6200 length.

Doesn't look like they any offseason public play or anything like some of the others though...too bad.

I'm unfortunately not too well-versed in the private layouts of the Cape, SE MA, and RI.   I've played Kittansett and the Bay Club of Mattapoisett in MA, and Newport and Misquamicut in RI though.  And Black Rock if that is still "in area" up in Hingham.
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

Acoaxet Golf Club in Westport is a short nine with some interesting holes and alternate tees on 8 so on back nine (or front?!) will play as a 5 par.

Skip the Bay Club and play Reservation Golf Club on the water in Mattapoisett.  Two other 9 holers that will take you back in time are Round Hill and Nonquit south of New Bedford.

Don't miss Marion since it is on the same road as Kittanset.
