I played this week on a somewhat older and shorter course.  I teed off around 4:20 - playing with Juan.  Jace joined us at the turn - we all walked.  They found a fair bit of trouble, and Juan talked a lot - in a friendly way.  We played a very casual round - we never caught anyone - no one caught us. 
We played in 3:10 without breaking a sweat.

Factors:
It was 6300 yards from the back - short walks green to tee - on a non-busy course - small greens that putted slow - few bunkers.

When I was playing a fair amount in the mid 90s (shooting in the mid 70s), I played most Monday mornings at Forest Hills. It is only about 6000 yds, and I'd tee off at first light - or even almost light. The pro would let me pay at the turn. I'd play by myself and would play in about 2 hours. I'd head home, shower and be at my office by 9am.

My favorite memories involved the satisfaction of playing just for myself and the beauty of the course at dawn. So many days I'd look back from the 3rd green and see my solitary footprints tracing their way through the light dew on the fairway.

I used to play witha group at my old course, we would be the first group off of the day, play 18 holes in about 3ish hours, sometimes less, sometimes a little more. Always as either a 3some or 4some. And this was a course that was about 6300 yards with a fair bit of trouble. Even when we played all the way back 6800 yards, we'd still play in the same time. There really is no reason that a round of golf can not be played in under 4 hours.

When you play with a buddy of like mind, you can both play your approach shots at the same time provided you are not endangering each other. First to hole the putt on the green has honors on the tee and goes there and hits while the other holes his putt. You get good exercise and you stay relaxed, AND you finish 18 in about 2 hours.

I have a friend that plays at a public course. His foursome is granted the first tee time every Saturday, because they make it into an aerobic workout and the foursome finishes in about 2 hours.
