Altering ODG green slopes via aerification......
« on: March 23, 2008, 01:29:02 PM »
Last week I tried something that had been explained but I ignored and it actually worked.  I am sure some here know of it and have tried it but.....
I am speaking of a green that was built 80 years ago and had a few pin positions that could no longer be used due to green speeds.....we marked the pin positions then painted where the area needed to be lowered in order to change the slpe from 4 percent down to 1.5.  We then aerified the upper area with 3/4 open tines 5 inches deep...(coremaster)....we then rolled with a weighted roller. It changed the slope at the pins to 2 percent with one time.....we will do it again in a month and we should be there.....anybody else ever tired this extensively???  I don't see a downside at this time.  Some of you supts tell me what it is......

I would like you to post to see if it stays there.  Seems like after the green airs out a little the slope will come back.

On the reverse, I know a course that regraded a green from 7 degrees to 4 degrees.  The super did it in house without an architect.  The members screamed because it wasn't the same.  They tried to build it up without success so now they are going to rebuild it again, this time with an architect and hopefully some professional shapers.

Not exactly the same thing Mike, but I have used core aerification to “mellow” out areas on greens where I couldn’t stop scalping from occurring.
I don’t think the green will “bounce” right back but I wouldn’t be surprised if repeated aerations were needed. I’d also probably open it up a bit after your all done as smashing the “you know what” out of it isn’t always a positive.
