Where to play in Florida?

Hallo GCA’ers - I have a friend who is off to Florida next week to visit a friend and put in some golfing. He would like to see and play some interesting courses and asked me if I knew of any  so I’m passing on the question-

Where in Florida? Why should he go there? Who designed?  How much could a round cost?

He'll be near Tampa, apparently there are 100 courses in the vicinity! However he's prepared to travel for something special.

Not played it but the new C&C course outside of Orlando would be worth the trip.....presumably.

If you have the hooks I would recommend Old Memorial (Smyers) or Palma Ceia (Ross) on the private side.  You can't go wrong with either course at World Woods, although Pine Barrens is better.  I never liked the TPC there, Cheval I think it's called.  We used to make the drive to Ocala and play Golden Ocala.  It has about 7 replica holes including a pretty good replica of ANGC 11,12, and 13, along with a pretty good road hole and postage stamp.  I think I read somewhere that it went private, but used to be public.  Another course that I would drive for is Southern Dunes in Haines City which is another Smyers.

Old Memorial is a very exclusive, expensive, well conditioned club with a better than average golf course, and that's all.

World Woods has two world class golf courses that are in the best condition they have ever been. You don't have to trouble anyone for access, and it costs less than half of what Old Memorial will extricate from you. I see no reason to go anywhere else.

I like the TPC Course at Tampa. It is not affiliated with Cheval, which is an overpriced real estate development with mediocre golf next door.

Palma Ceia is good but not great. It is tightly crammed into a small amount of acreage and to me has a crowded feel to it. If your friend is itching to play an old private club, go for Temple Terrace instead

Lake Jovita is pretty well regarded, with some of the more interesting greens and contours in the area

Sugarloaf Mountain is no where near Lake Wales, t is around Clermont. I am not sure if they have 18 holes open yet.

For the budget minded golfer, try Bloomingdale or for a quirky day, try Scotland Yards.

The sleeper is Brooksville CC

I can attest to Brooksville CC, having played it the last 2 january's. $35 green fee-very good golf course-access as easy as a phone call.

Brooksville CC over Scotland Yards 6 &5-(although the pitchers are cheaper at Scotland Yards)

The Majors in Palm Bay   ....east coast ...near Melbourne is one of the best Palmer golf courses anywhere.


Lots of fun...good layout...reasonably priced

Innisbrook in Tarpon Springs is another resort option. You could stay here and play the 3 courses and not have to travel . Good golf -not great in my opinion. Can be a bit pricey this time year. Black Diamond is probably the best golf on the gulf coast-a bit of a drive and access may be an issue.

Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

I'd add another positive review for World Woods. Pine Barrens gets most of the ink and I agree is the better course but I like Rolling Oaks as a second course very much too. The back nine at Rolling Oaks might be the best nine at the complex. The practice putting green is very cool too, as is the entire practice facility.

El Diablo was a good course 5 or 7 years ago if you were in the World Woods neighborhood...not sure of accesibility though...
