Philly Cricket Club (Wissahickon) gets 2010 Women's Mid-Am!
« on: January 14, 2008, 04:23:57 PM »
Woo hoo!  Here's the USGA press release...and for those of you who like celebrating annivaersaries, it'll be the 100th anniv of their last U.S. Open.  From the release:

THE PHILADELPHIA CRICKET CLUB TO HOST 2010 U.S. WOMEN’S MID-AMATEUR

"Far Hills, N.J. – The Philadelphia Cricket Club in Flourtown, Pa., near Philadelphia, has been chosen as the site of the 2010 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship by the United States Golf Association. The dates of the championship are Sept. 25-30.

The championship will be played on the club’s Wissahickon course, which was designed by famed architect A.W. Tillinghast and opened in 1922.

The Philadelphia Cricket Club was founded in 1854 and began offering golf to its members in 1895 at its nine-hole St. Martin’s layout, which was expanded to 18 holes in 1897.

The 2010 Women’s Mid-Amateur will mark 100 years since the club hosted a USGA championship. Previously, the St. Martin’s course was the site of U.S. Open Championships in 1907 and 1910, won by Alex Ross and Alex Smith, respectively.

The club opened the Wissahickon course in 1922. Tillinghast, who played in the 1907 and 1910 U.S. Open Championships, was a member of The Philadelphia Cricket Club.

In 2002, the club opened its Militia Hill course, designed by Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry. It is believed to be the only club in the nation to open a golf course in three different centuries.

“The Philadelphia Cricket Club is delighted to host this USGA championship as we commemorate the centennial of the 1910 U.S. Open,” said Barbara M. Daly, the first female president of the club. “We believe the women playing in 2010 will love our traditional and classic Wissahickon course. We are excited as we move forward with a growing and active membership that is committed to both the history and future of the game of golf.”

To date, Pennsylvania has hosted 77 USGA championships, more than any other state.

Prior to 2010, the Women’s Mid-Amateur will be played at Barton Hills Country Club in Ann Arbor, Mich., from Sept. 6-11, 2008; and at Golden Hills Golf and Turf Club in Ocala, Fla., from Oct. 3-8, 2009.

First played in 1987, the Women’s Mid-Amateur is open to female amateurs who are at least 25 years old and have a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 9.4."

Interesting tidbit about Penn. hosting the most USGA events.  I wonder what state has held the most PGA events?  The most majors total?  Any guesses?

Thats cool about the old club getting a championship on the 100th aniversary of their last. The USGA seems to like doing that though, Newport CC comes to mind.
--Oakmont is a major reason there have been so many championships in PA though, something like 20 have been held there alone. Merion has held a few as well.

I've never been big on the whole "anniversary thing..."  What happens if two courses have a similar anniversary - e.g. 50th for winged foot, but 75th for oakmont...which wins?

I understand people ooh and ahh over those things, and its a nice ornament, but TV sometimes oversells that angle.  That being said, it's nice to see Philly Cricket Club getting lotsw of good things heading its way...what a fun golf course and a relaxing place.

Surely the state with the most total majors is Georgia.

Jay-I don't think it works for all anniversarys. It seems the USGA only does it for 100th anniversaries. Newport CC got the 100th US Am, when it held the first US Am. I don't think the USGA is into doing this for all anniversaries.--But either way, I see no problem with the idea.

I see that the USGA forgot that Flynn did some work at Cricket.

Right, Phil and I are of one mind when it comes to the architectural history of Philadelphia Cricket.  The Wissahickon course has a unique and fascinating evolution that Phil and I understand quite well and have related to the club.  We will continue to assist (Phil more so than I) going forward.

Jay -

Congratulations!  We hosted the Women's Mid Am this year and everyone involved had a great time.  The players and the USGA couldn't have been nicer.

The Wissahickon course should set up well for this championship.  The greens should make match play interesting.

Cricket Club's old course really has a special feel to it.  It will be a great test for a Women's Mid-Am and could probably hold a Women's AM and possibly even a Women's open if they wanted to.

I just love the 9th and 18th holes among others.

Yeah, I love 9 and 18, but I also love the pastoral feel of the back nine there.  Just like St. martin's, its really just a pleasant nature hike in the neighborhood with your golf clubs.  It's really charming...

David, why are you congratulating me?  I'm not a member, I just think the place is terrific.

This is indeed great news for the club.  Any USGA interest is a benefit, and this event should raise the profile of the course’s unique history. (which, as stated above, was incomplete as cited by the USGA)

As a quick update, and largely in response to Mr. Carpenter’s tree management essay, the club has taken the initial steps towards implementing a program.  We are in the process of selecting an architect to craft a master plan.  Obviously, careful development and execution of that plan are HUGE steps that are ahead.

Sorry - thought that you were.  Have you played the new course?  I've seen it when back visiting family but haven't played it.  It looks like it has a pretty different character, kind of like the newest 9 at Philadelphia Country.

I would guess that there is a lot of elevation change from what Joshua Road does there.  Do the holes go up and down the hill, or meander around a bit?

Dave

The new course, Militia Hill, has a bunch of elevation changes along the back nine.Holes 1 and 2 share the same topography.  Typically the holes play perpendicular to the +/- 20 ft ridge the runs thru the property, resulting in elevated tees or elevated greens. The greens for 2, 14 and 18 are elevated.  The tees for 11 13 and 17 are elevated. The other holes play a bit more gradually uphill or downhill.

It's definitely a long, modern course, and provides a great contrast to the Tillinghast / Flynn masterpeice next door.
