I am going to play The Golf Club of California on January 11.  Does anyone have any information on this course.  Where else in the Oceanside area would make this a good golf trip?

San Clemente is only 20 mins from Oceanside.

A good course,well routed, and fun to play.
A good choice for the second course is Cross Creek which is about 30 minutes away.

Pala Mesa is very close by, it's a nice old school type layout.

The golf course at Camp Pendleton is open for public play and has gotten some nice words on this board.

CP is only open for public play Mon.-Thurs. Also, they have begun a green repairing program. Right now, the 5th and 14th greens are closed with temps in place. They will be doing 2 at a time until they are all done. Regardless, it has some very neat holes despite some spotty conditions. If you're walking in the afternoon it's all of $15 for civilians.

   If you really want to see a good course I would take the time to make the long drive down to Barona Creek, east of San Diego. There is nothing else of note around San Clemente/Oceanside. Otherwise I would head north through the land of traffic hell (LA) to check out Rustic Canyon. BR or RC are worth the effort if you have the time.

I would include Soule Park in there as well if you're willing to make the drive. I certainly find it worth the effort, but I'm biased.

I have heard a lot of good things about Rustic Canyon but Barona maybe a better option.  I have never been through the traffic in LA and don't know if I want to on this trip.

Even from Oceanside it will take take you about an hour to get to Barona. While I like Barona very much, Rustic is hands down the better course. Also, Barona has really jacked up the rates as of late. $200 prime time on Saturday! You just have to weigh the pros and cons.
