I'll be in Austin TX for a little work and a little Austin City Limits Music Fest next week. Anything worth toting the clubs down for?

Looks like The Bandit might be worth the drive to New Braunfels -- I'm a fan of Keith Foster but not sure I'll have the time for the drive. The Barton Creek courses look to be stay and play -- is it possible to play without staying there? The other interesting one looks to be Buckhorn in Comfort.

Thanks for any advice.

I'd be surprised if you couldn't play Barton Creek without staying there.  I haven't made the trip over to Austin with my clubs yet, but it looks like there is a lot of great possibilities.  If you are traveling through Houston let me know.

Buck:

Things might have changed, but last time I was down there Barton Creek was stay and play only, but they did allow reciprocals.

I didn't allow enough time and ended up at Avery Ranch.

Not sure what else is there on the public side, but I enjoyed it.

Buck;
A few suggestions depending on how much time you have while in town:

Delaware Springs (public): About 1 hr north of Austin - incredible muni by Axland and Proctor (work for Coore & Crenshaw) that's fun to play and really fits the land well.  Every time I play it I get around in about 3 hours so it has a special place in my heart.

Riverside Golf Course (public): Formerly Austin Country Club, before the club moved to its present location in 1986. On the backside, there's a number of preserved Perry Maxwell holes that are quite good.

Austin Golf Club (Private): Hardest ticket in town to get, Ben Crenshaw's little hideaway. I hear its a very good track but not enough play by the cognisenti to know how it stacks up against their better known works.

I'm a member at Great Hills CC, a good (not excellent) course just north of the city and would be glad to set you up unaccompanied if times are available.

I lived down in Austin for three years before moving in May and have played most of the courses in the area.

Assuming you don't have access to Austin CC or Austin GC, Barton Creek is the place to play.  To my knowledge, you don't have to stay there to play, though they do charge you an arm and a leg as a non-resort guest.  If you don't mind forking over the cash (probably $200-$250), I'd play the on-site courses in this order: 1) Fazio Foothills, 2) Fazio Canyons, 3) Coore and Crenshaw.

Falconhead is a fun, challenging and well-conditioned layout that should run you about $60.  Avery Ranch is a step down from Falconhead but pretty decent.

The Bandit and Delaware Springs are good values but IMO don't merit flying down your clubs and then making the hour drive from Austin.  Some would disagree.

Lions on Lake Austin Blvd. is a classic muni with wonderful views of the Hill Country, though long rounds are the norm there.

Have a great time down in Austin.  That shouldn't be hard, especially with ACL going on.  Ah, I'm getting jealous just thinking about it.

Others to consider while in Austin are River Place (Tom Kite), Flintrock Falls (JN, a sister course to The Hills where the seniors play) and Cimarron Hills (JN).

River Place #4

Flintrock Falls #11

Cimarron Hills #5

Buck-

I used to work in the Austin area as an Assistant Golf Pro and have played just about every course.  Here are a few public access courses in the area I would reccomend.

Barton Creek (hard to do but you can get on there without staying at the Resort)
Roy Kizer (best muni in town, close to downtown)
Avery Ranch (nice course in north Austin)
Colovista (nice course in Bastrop, about 30 min from downtown)
Circle C (in SW Austin, its a Jay Morish course)

Here are my favorite private courses, but you will probably need a connection to get on any of these.

Austin Country Club (Pete Dye course)
Austin Golf Club (Coore/Crenshaw)
Spanish Oaks (Bobby Weed)
Cimarron Hills (Nicklaus)
Onion Creek Club (Demaret, Coore/Crenshaw)

Deleware Springs, The Bandit, and Buckhorn are pretty good courses, but with limited time I think you would be better off playing a course in or close to Austin so you don't waste any time at Austin City Limits!  What a great event, have fun!

Make sure you check out Bela Fleck and the Flecktones (that's best band on the lineup by a mile).  Victor Wooten is probably the greatest electric bassist of all-time.  For golf, Delaware Springs seems like a good choice based on this site, just make sure it doesn't interfere with the Flecktones!!

Although I can't say much for JNC's undergraduate institution (Holy Cross alum  ;D), I second his endorsement of the Flecktones.

My undergraduate institution is fantastic, thank you.  Plus, Colgate Golf dusted Holy Cross, Bucknell, Lehigh, and 10 other schools this weekend for a huge victory in the season opener (I don't play on the team, but I was there to witness the triumph).

Thanks for the suggestions --music and golf. Not sure I'll have time for a round but the options look good.

Pete Yorn vs Bela Fleck on Friday afternoon, given the venue I'll probably take Bela 1 up -- not sure a big outdoor event is the right place to see Pete Yorn.

Aidan as always -- spectacular Photos.

Don't pass up Bela and the Fleck's.....Victor is worth ten times the price of admission. You'll pay just fractions of a penny per note, to paraphrase one of his own lines....

I think there should be some sort of GCA/Music get together at some point. I know there are some Alt-Country types on the board, we could do Twangfest and golf in St. Louis in June.

Even better would be a Lloyd Cole show after a day of GCA. Check out where he's playing Oct. 10 -- any decent courses around there?

I've listened to some of Joe's music.... and I do like Pete Yorn.
The best thing about City Limits isn't the music (accousticly speaking), it's the festival itself.

I did just get the i-tunes 2007 ACL sampler and "Rodrigo y Gabriela" are awesome - I'd go see them.

Here is my suggestion:
A few years ago my wife and I went.
After she couldn't stand the heat we went straight to the Driskill downtown for one of my favorite all time meals.

I knew I was a little old for the ACL crowd when I started figuring out how many people there were as compared to cabs and busses.... Getting out of there is tough business.

Have fun.

I might offer Stanley Clarke as a suggestion in this particular category.

Speaking of great bassists, Jaco Pastorius was a great one with Weather Report and other combinations of musicians. And, speaking of Weather Report, Joe Zawinul died yesterday.  Hats off to a great one.

Mike --
A little worried my best festival days have passed me by as well -- only doing Friday, a 3 day pass might kill me. We've signed up for the Robert Earl Keen after party at The Parish which I hope we can walk to from the festival -- hopefully there'll be plenty of cabs after that.
