Interesting reply as I was wondering who the NCGA thought it was bidding against to "win" the deal.

MPCC and Spanish Bay are the only other choices as I doubt the Monterey Peninsula Foundation and PGA Tour would take the 3rd course out of the 17 mile drive.

I doubt that Spanish Bay could handle the spectators leaving MPCC as the only alternative.

And to that, I don't see what upside is available to MPCC by being in the rotation of AT&T West Coast National Pro-Am.

Mike,

From my point of view, none at all.

I doubt the planned changes are very drastic.

Last week I played there, and spoke with Tyler Jones (dir. golf, who was out on the course with Manny Sousa, the supt.)  He said they were looking at some new tees - I think #1, #17 and another hole.

I asked him about my current pet peeve - the cart path on #3 next to the ladies tee, and he said that would be changed.  It's currently right on the driving line from the blues...

And having played SH and PH at least 30 times each, I'd say they have a lot more in common than most people think.  If you asked me the Huckaby metric of 10 plays, I'd split it 5/5.

Of course, the doglegs do get to some people. I believe Scott Simpson once famously summarize the course: "Even the men's bathroom has a double dogleg."

And it's funny cause it's true  :)

Making a par-5 a par-4, presumably by relocating the tee box by 200 yards and reversing the direction of a par-3 is not drastic?

Perhaps the drastic part is WHY they would be making these changes ... ;)

Bob,

Just curious which course the AT&T organizers want to use. I'd guess the Dunes?

I agree with you though, it's hard to see the upside of losing your club for an entire week, even in February.

Rumor has it that there will be some changes to the course in the future, somehow related to signing on for another 10 years with the PGA Tour.  Perhaps Scott can confirm, dispell, or add to the rumor.

- The first tee will be moved back and to the left near (or on) where the ninth green currently is.

- The 11th hole will be reversed, with a tee from the curent green site playing towards a green at the current tee site.

- The 12th hole will become a par four.

Not to spread more rumors but it was mentioned that they are also discussing turning #10 into a par-4 for speed of play issues.

Mike, just curious. Do you happen to know why they think this will speed up play?

BTW, reversing 11 seems silly to me.

The comment was that many golfers wait for the green to clear in an attempt to go for the green in two.
