Milwaukee CC - Under the Radar?
« on: August 13, 2007, 03:44:45 PM »
MCC has long been considered one of the best courses in the Country however it seems to fly under the radar in discussions about "Classic" parkland designs. Could this be the intention of the membership?

I had the good fortune to play this fabulous Colt / Alison gem last week. The club will play host to the 2008 USGA Mid-Am. and I am sure most contestants will be amazed by the golf course. Mr. Doak's firm has been retained to make some "tweeks" to the course including several new tees and several less trees.

The large subtle greens guarded by monster flashed bunkering is a throwback to a bygone era. Conditioning of the course from tee to green is impeccable thanks to the efforts of the Superintendent Pat Sisk and his staff. MCC is very deserving of all accolades bestowed upon it. It is truly a the hidden gem of the Midwest.

Rob:

MCC really does fly under the radar, and friends who know the course well say it's by intention. It's always kept a very low profile, and I was somewhat surprised that it agreed to co-host the Mid-Am next year; I'm looking forward to going over there for to watch at least a round next year.

A good friend of mine, a writer on golf in Wisconsin, has played all of the high-profile public courses developed in Wisconsin in the past decade or so -- WStraits, the Blackwolf courses, others -- and says MCC is still the best course in the state. Manual de la Torre was (still is?) a fairly legendary teaching pro based out of there for seemingly ever.

I'd probably be inclined to agree with that statement about Wisconsin. If not, MCC certainly puts up one heck of a fight against any other well regarded course in WI. I am very glad to hear that Mr. Doak & Co.  will be the ones charged with "tweaking" this gem.

It has one hell of a great men's locker room. The professional emeritus, Manuel de la Torre, is one of the best instructors of all time. A wonderful test of golf with terrific atmosphere.

Certainly one of my favorites, my second being Lawsonia Links in Wisconsin.  I put both above Whistling Straits and Blackwolf.

I'm curious what specific things were done by Doak and his crew - I haven't played there in a couple of years.

Last i heard Manuel is still teaching at MCC. He teaches a method similar to Ernest Jones swing the clubhead. A timeless method taught at a timeless course. As a bonus his fee is timeless as well.

Growing up not far from there there was always a debate about which was better Milwaukee or Ozaukee.  Milwaukee seemed to get the nod as the better course with Ozaukee having the better set of greens.

I was fortunate enough to play at Milwaukee while in college.  It was a great course.  Too bad I didn't pay attention to any of the architecture while there.  I just remember having a fun round.

Chris,
Sounds like you did pay attention and didn't know it.

I've alway heard nothing but praise for this layout. I'll have to try and make it there one day. (On the road to Lawsonia)(Sounds like the name of a Bob Hope/Bing Crosby movie)

Several of the completed modifications include the reclamation of shrunken putting surfaces. There is a new back tee on #14 as well as a new fariway bunker and widened fairway on the right from the bunker to the green. Trees and underbrush has been cleared along the river on #15 opening up the views. New tees have also been built along the river on #15. Several more renovations are being discussed (negotiated) through the greens comittee. #10 has been the subject of much controversary particularly with respect to tree removal.

BTW the Men's locker room is a classic tudor style design with individual shower stalls along the interior wall. The large fireplace along the exterior wall creates a comfortable post round setting. Unfortunately there is no air conditioning in the locker room resulting in a quick exit during the dog days of summer.

Next year's US Mid-Amateur will be held at Milwaukee CC (Brown Deer Park is the second course).  I'm looking forward to going there.
