200 sq. ft. per 1000 rounds /par 3's for tees?
« on: August 26, 2002, 10:38:55 AM »
Recently i was told that par 3's should have 200 sq. ft. of teeing area per 1000 rounds played.Where does this idea come from?Is there some printed documentation to support it?

Mayday,
This is the ol' rule of thumb.  For a course doing 40K rounds/year tees should be 4K square feet except par threes, and the first and tenth tees which should be 8K square feet.  It is a whole lot of teeing space, but you can never have too much, just ask your Superintendent!

Even those numbers sound awfully low.

For a public course (30,000 rounds + in Canada), we typically average in the range of 6,000 sq.ft. for tees of 4's and 5's, and closer to 10,000 sq.ft. for tees on par 3's.

And where possible on par 3's I would advise more distance crossways rather than lengthwise.  Tillinghast addressed this many years ago. A good hole will then play a bit differently depending on the tee markers.  A bit more variety, not a bad thing in golf and life.  Unfortunately, today we seem to be limited by trees and tree planing which creates too much shade.

It must be kept in mind that the elusive charm of the game suffers as soon as any successful method of standardization is allowed to creep in.  A golf course should never pretend to be, nor is intended to be, an infallible tribunal.

I second Lynn's comment. Angles make great golf holes better and no where is that true than a par 3.
