Roxiticus (Hal Purdy) mendham nj
« on: July 08, 2007, 07:06:27 PM »
Purdy did a lot of work in  ny and nj  in the 1960s and 1970s
bill Quirin speaks highly of this course in his fine  survey of MGA courses. Quirin metions rugged terrain  , challenging holes and some drop  shot par threes. has anyone played Roxiticus ?? could this be considered   Purdy's magnum opus.. what are other Purdy designs seekong  out.   thanks

I know little of Hal Purdy. One of the Green Committee members at a club we are working with is his grandson. I am trying to learn more. He was a very busy guy up until his passing, that is really all I know.

Mark:

Roxiticus was started by some of the New York Yankees (Mantle, Berra, Martin, etc.)

I played it last year. There are a couple of good holes but the overall course does not do justice to the property.

The start is rather awkward (straight downhill then 90 degrees left) Anywhere from rescue to 6 iron off the tee. There was not one singular buker on the course (with the exception of a hole redone by Hurdzan and Frye) that had any golf value at all.

Beautiful rolling piece of property with the remnant of an old estate complete with stable (wherre the pro shop is housed) and other quaint out-buildings. I don't know how much of this course is Purdy, I would bet that it has been monkeyed with over the years.

Would be way down on the list for a re-visit, especially given the options in the near area.

Michael Fay,

It was Ralph Terry, not Mantle and Berra.

I believe that the Shanley Family owned the land and took the club over before selling it back to the membership.

The terrain is difficult.
Not the kind of golf course I'd want to play day in and day out.  6 doglegs on the front nine, 6 on the back nine.

The original clubhouse and carriage house were magnificent, unfortunately a fire claimed the clubhouse, the manager and his wife. years ago.

The course I grew up on, Warrenbrook, is a Hal Purdy.  It was built around 1964-65.  It started out as a private club and around the time I left to go to college, it went public and became part of the Somerest County Park system.  It's a pretty narrow course and not overly long.  A fun course to play from what I remember.
