What Larry means is he obviously prefers the good old US of A's tax system about ten years ago after decades of legislative pork barreling had built up a tax avoidance structure that a really good tax accountant could take advantage of for his rich clients with clever manipulating.

Then the legislative SOBs stripped away all that decades long layered tax avoidance system and tried to start anew with a simpler and cleaner slate where most all accountants were on a semi-equal footing because things were so much simpler.

But don't worry about it--given time and lobbying our legislators will layer the system again via pork-barreling where the rich people will skate on tax through clever tax accountant manipulation again and the poor folks will pay the freight because they don't know how to avoid taxation.

And do you know what will happen? We'll get more golf courses and maybe even some that are really good ones. It could be indirect tax at its finest in an economic context--sort of like the rich guy hitting his drive into the semi-rough on the wrong side of the fairway but not having to pay the tax for quite some time.

Whether or not the rich guy makes a birdie or an "other" is not of interest to us--believe me-- because the course is done!

You plan, you screw up, you make a new plan, you get a bad bounce, you make a new plan, you get lucky, you putt and you go to the next tee to make a new plan that isn't terribly likely to matter.

Everybody on this site and every architect in the world should copy this quote, tattoo it on their palm and and surgically implant a microchip containing it in their brain.

This is what golf is all about.

I did enjoy Rick's post on this subject more than the rest.

But, Rick, the purpose of architecture isn't really to control how the play goes.  It's to give you enough food for thought that you have to make a plan for each shot, instead of just planning to hit it close to the hole.

Proponents of both the indirect tax and direct tax approach will take this statement as an endorsement of their side of the story.  And, they are both right!
