Random fairway bunkers, would

they add to the interest and challenge in the game if they were positioned such that they obscured the area immediately behind them  ?

If they obscured the putting surface but not the Flag ?

Wasn't that a quality of some centerline fairway bunkers ?

1. Yes, Prestwick is interesting and challenging.
2. Yes, The Redan is interesting and challenging .
3. Yes, the gaping maw fairway/wall bunker hole #4 @ Barnbougle is interesting and challenging.

I've always liked random bunkers, can spice and add interest to a boring patch of ground.  On this side of the pond Oceanview near Atlantic City has made use of some superbly placed ones,in MHO.

Has the modern game made quite a few Dick Wilson, RTJ fairway bunkers become "random"?  I've noticed some renovations move the bunkering further down the fairway, I'd prefer leaving them and adding some new structures.

All I know is that I have found myself in a lot of random bunkers. After playing a course for years you figure out that there are no such thing as random bunkers, regardless of the architects intent.

I think that they are interesting and challenging even if they don't hide anything.  The first hole at Narin and Portnoo is a great example of "pots in the way of progress" as I have ever seen.  Without them the hole would be listless. With them the hole raises the pucker factor tenfold.  And one can't help to ponder and wonder who came up with that constellation of traps.
